BRAGADAYJAH 1173
Nehemiah’s Prayer Answered.
Nehemiah who was Artaxerxes cupbearer besought the Lord that he may
find favor with the king. And the Lord answered his prayer. For it came to pass
that in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes’ reign that
Nehemiah appeared before the king with a heavy heart an d a sad countenance.
And the king, seeing his sad countenance asked him something was the matter, since
that he was not ill. And Nehemiah said, “Let the king live forever. If it
pleases the king and if thy servant has found favor in thy sight, to send me
unto Judah, unto Jerusalem the city of my fathers that I may build it.” And the
king acceded to his request and the king in the presence of the queen who was
sitting beside him, permission to stay away as long as it was necessary to
complete the work before he would return, and the king gave him permission to
go. Nehemiah then asked the king to give him letters of introduction to the governor
beyond the river that he may give him safe conveyance to the other side, and
also letters to Asap the keeper of the keeper of the forest to take timber from
the forest to assist in the building work; and the king granted him all his
requests.
