BRAGADAYJAH 1160
About Ezra.
Now Ezra was a direct descendant of Aaron the chief priest, and he
went up out of Babylon as one out of the captivity; and in the days of Artaxerxes
he was a scribe of the Law of Moses. And the Lord God was with him; and he was
able to obtain from the king all his requests, as the Lord made it possible by
touching the heart of the king. And during the seventh year of Artaxerxes, he
and others of the children of Israel, the priests and Levites singers porters
and Nethinims, went up to Jerusalem during the seventh year of the reign of
king Artaxerxes. (The Nethinims probably refer to the given ones, and may refer
directly to the Gibeonites whom Joshua had assigned to be perpetual slaves to
cut wood and carry water. And Ezra came to Jerusalem during the fifth month;
for upon the first day of the first month he set out from Babylon to Jerusalem arriving
there on the first day of the fifth month. For the Lord had laid it upon his
heart to seek the law of the Lord and to do it, and to teach all Israel His
statutes and judgments.
