And after forty days and forty nights Moses went down from
Mount Sinai with the two tables of stone containing the testimony; and as he
returned to the congregation, he had no idea that there was a change to his
facial features; but when Aaron and the children of Israel saw Moses, they saw
and marveled in that Moses’ face shone so brightly and so distinctly that Aaron
and the others were afraid to go near him, or to look at him, and actually
tried to run away from him.
But Moses
called to them, to Aaron and the Elders of the congregation and they returned
to him allowing him to talk with them.
And the rest of the congregation, seeing Aaron and the elders talking
with Moses, took courage and themselves drew near unto Moses, whereupon he told
them all the commandments the Lord had commanded him on Mount Sinai; but while
he was speaking to the congregation until he was finished, Moses placed a veil
over his face, perceiving that the people could not look at him owing to the
brightness of his countenance.
Then Moses
went into the tabernacle to speak with the Lord and he removed the face from
his; but after that when he returned to speak with the people he again put the
veil upon his face.
And Moses
gathered all the congregation of the Children of Israel together and said to
them, “ These are the words which the Lord hath commanded, that you shall do
them; six days shall work be done; but the seventh day shall be holy to you. On it you shall not even light the fire; for
it is to be kept as a Sabbath unto the Lord.”
