So now, the Lord told Moses to take the people and lead them
into the land which He had promised to give to them via the promises He had
made to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.
The Lord’s
angel was to go before Moses, and the Lord promised that He would drive out the
Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites and the
Jebusites, the occupants of the lands they were to pass over.
The Lord
described the land to which Moses was directed to take them as a land flowing
with milk and honey; in other words a rich and pleasant land; but the Lord said
He was sending His angel to lead them as He was not inclined to dwell among
them because that they were a stiff-necked people and He did not want to
destroy them.
Moses duly
told the people what was in the heart of God, and when they heard it they
became very sorrowful and in deep mourning put away their ornaments. For God
had told Moses to say to the people; “Ye are a stiff-necked people; I will come
up into the midst of thee in a moment, and I will consume thee; therefore now
put off thy ornaments from thee that I may decide what I am going to do unto
you.”
And hearing
this warning the children of Israel
stripped themselves of their ornaments at the foot of Mount Horeb .
