And the following
morning the people told Abimelech that Gaal and his brethren had been cast out
of Shechem and Abimelech divided them up into three companies and he laid wait
in the field. And he later saw people coming out of the city and he rose up and
slew them. And next Abimelech and his company rushed toward the city gate and
the other two companies rushed into the field and slew the people that were
there, and Abimelech fought against the city all that day. And he took the city
and slew the people that were in it, and beat down the city and sowed it with
salt. And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard, that entered into the
hold at the house of the god Berith. And it was told Abimelech that all the men
of the tower of Shechem were gathered together. And Abimelech got him up to
mount Zalmon, he and all his people that were with him. And Abimelech took an
axe in his hand and cut down a bow from the trees, and laid it on his shoulder
and told the people that were with him to do likewise; and they all hastened to
do so. And all the people like wise cut a bow and laid it in his shoulder and
placed them against the tower of Shechem and set fire to them so that all the
men and women inside, a thousand or so, died.
