At the height of Israel’s apostasy, Abimelech, son of Jerubbaal went to
Shechem unto his mother’s brethren and reasoned with them together with all the
family of the house of his mother and challenged them to decide whether it
would be better for them if all the sons of Jerubbaal, all seventy of them to
reign over them, or that one person should reign, not forgetting the he Abimelech
was their flesh and blood. And his mother’s brethren repeated Abimelech’s words
in the ears of all the men of Shechem, and their hearts were inclined to following
Abimelech; for they acknowledged that he was their brother. And they gave him
three scores and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baalberith and Abimelech
took the money and hired vain and flighty persons to follow after him.
