The Two Sets of Stones
And it came to pass that when all the children
of Israel had completely passed over the Jordan, that the Lord spoke to Joshua
and said, “Take twelve men of the people out of every tribe and command them to
take out of the midst of the Jordan at the place where the soles of the feet of
the priests stood firm, twelve stones and carry them over with you, and leave
them in the lodging place where you spend the first night; and Joshua having
chosen twelve men commanded them as God had commanded him. These stones Joshua
informed them were to be signs for future generations to observe, so that when
their children should ask them about the significance of the stones, they would
be able to tell them the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of
the covenant of the Lord when it passed over the water which was cut off so
that they crossed over on dry land, and these stones were kept as a reminder
for us and for you. And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan
where the soles of the feet of the priests stood, also for a memorial for
