Between Jephthah and the three kings
who followed him, Ibzan, Elon and Abdon, they reigned over Israel thirty one
years; but as soon as the last judge died, Israel again fell away from God and
He delivered them into the hands of the Philistines forty years. And there was
a certain man of Zorah of the family of the Danites whose name was Manoah and
his wife was barren and bore no children. And the angel of the LORD appeared
unto the woman and said to her, “Behold now thou art barren and have no
children; but you shall conceive and have a son. Now therefore, beware I urge
you, drink not wine nor strong drink and eat not any unclean thing. For lo you
shall conceive and bear a son, and no razor shall come upon his head; for the
child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb; and he shall begin to deliver
Israel out of the hands of the Philistines.
