Job Cursed his Day.
Then Job spoke and said, “Cursed be this day; let the day perish wherein I was
born; and the night in which it was said there is a man child conceived. Let
that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light
shine upon it. Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell
upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it. As for the night, let
darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the day of the year; let it
come not unto the number of the months. Lo, let that night be solitary; let no
joyful voice come therein. Let them cursed it that curse the day, who are ready
to raise up their mourning. Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let
it look for light but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day.
Because it shut not up the doors of my mother’s womb, nor his sadness from my
eyes. Why died I not from the womb? “Why did I not give up the ghost when came
I out of the belly? Why did the knees prevent me? Or why the breasts that I
should suck? For now should I have lain quiet; I should have slept, then had I
been at rest.

Job’s Troubles
Then Job’s wife, seeing the distress of her husband, said unto Job, “Do you still hold to your integrity in God, Why do you not curse him and die?” But Job responded and told her “You speak as one of the foolish women. Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil also?” And Job continued to hold to his righteousness and refrain from sin. Soon Job’s three friends heard of Job’s troubles, and they came from their places each of them, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; for they had consulted with each other and agreed that the three of them should visit Job at the same time, and to comfort him. And while they were some distance away, they saw Job, but did not recognize him, because of the state he was in; and they were so overcome that they wept and tore their mantle and sprinkled dust upon their heads So they went and sat with Job upon the ground seven days and seven nights; and during that time, no one spoke because they saw the grief that Job was suffering.

Satan’s Second Assault on Job.
Again a day came when the sons of God went to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD. And again the Lord asked Satan from whence he came; and Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth and walking up and down on it.” And the Lord asked Satan whether he would admit that there was none on the earth as perfect and upright as Job was, remaining in his integrity, and refusing to depart from it, although he Satan had done so much to him to destroy him. And Satan answered and said, “Skin for skin, indeed all that a man has he will give for his life.” And the Lord told Satan to do as he would with Job save that he was not allowed to kill him. So Satan satisfied went away and immediately afflicted Job with painful boils all over his body from his head to his feet; and so afflicted was Job that he used a fragment of broken pottery to scratch himself and sat down in ashes.

Satan’s attack on Job
Satan made three strikes against Job’s possessions; but while the third survivor of Job’s servants were yet reporting to him, a fourth came in with an even worse report who said, “Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house. And there came a great wind from the wilderness and smote the four corners of the house and it fell upon the young people and they are all dead; and I even I only am left to bring you the report.” Then Job rose and rent his clothes, and shaved his head and fell upon the ground and worshipped. And Job said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb; and naked shall I return thither; the Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed is the name of the Lord.” So despite his grievous trials, job sinned not nor accused God foolishly.

Satan assaults Job- Wealth and Sons
And as soon as Satan got his wish, he wasted no time trying to strip Job of his righteousness and standing with God. So while Job’s sons and daughters were at the eldest son’s house feasting, Job got the report that while his oxen were ploughing and the asses were feeding beside them, the Sabeans fell upon them and took them away, and slayed all the workers in the process, the sole messenger being the only one who escaped to bear the bad news. And before the first messenger could finish his report, a second messenger came also with ill report, saying that fire from heaven had fallen upon and devoured all the sheep and the servants attending them, again the messenger being the only one left to bear the tidings. And while the two messengers were reporting, a third messenger came and reported that the Chaldeans consisting of three bands of them, fell upon the camels and have carried them away and killing the servants in the process. So Satan struck against Job’s oxen, his sheep, his camels and his servants; and he was not finished with Job yet.

God Gives Satan Limited Authority
So Satan was not ignorant concerning the power and providence of God; and one may even wonder why Satan even bothers to mess with God’s people; for here is what he said to God. “You have made a hedge about him; and about his house and about all that he has on every side; thou has blessed the work of his hands; and his substance is increased in the land. But put forth Thy hand now and touch all that he has and he will curse thee to thy face.” And the lord said unto Satan, “Behold all that he has are in your power only upon himself put not thine hand.” So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord. What an instructive exchange that was. Without saying it says,, God looks after his own. Not only his person, his possessions and everything that pertains to him; but God blesses and prosper him in every way. It is a pity that those who profess a relationship with God fail to acknowledge or to know the power of God.

Job Accused by Satan.
I happened that at the very moment when Job was making intercession to God for the sanctification and safety of his sons, that when the sons of God were appearing before God, Satan took the opportunity to appear among them. And God knowing that Satan was up to no good, as Satan never is, He asked Satan in effect what he wanted, and what had he been doing. And Satan responded and said, that he was doing in fact what he always does, going to and fro throughout the earth, walking up and down on it seeking souls to devour. And the Lord said to Satan, I know you have been trying to mess with my servant Job, and I know that by now you realize that there is none like him on the earth, a perfect and upright man who reverences God and hates all that is evil. Then Satan responded and said, “I know God who Job is; but I also know that he is untouchable only because he has your protection around him; but remove that protection and he would be just like any other man.”

A Man Called Job
Immediately preceding, our story ended in the Kingdom of Persia, a land governed by a King called Ahasuerus, and his beautiful Queen Esther, and a man , a Jew called Mordecai. Today introduces one of the best known and perhaps most frequently quoted, a man called Job. Job lived in the land of Uz, a place name of Edom; and we are told that this Job was perfect and upright, and one that feared God and eschewed evil. Four excellent qualities; one would say that in fact Job was a righteous man. Job had seven sons and three daughters, and obviously then a wife. In terms of wealth, he had what counted for wealth in those days; seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yokes of oxen, five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that he was counted as the greatest of all the men of the East. As it happened it was a time of celebration for Job’s seven sons, who took turns to have feasts, and to these feastings they invited their sisters. Like all good fathers, Job was concerned for the sanctity of his children; so that in the midst of their feasting, Job blessed them, and rose early in the morning and prayed for they, offering up for them burnt offerings, for he thought to himself, maybe they have sinned and cursed God in their hearts. So Job made intercession for them continually.

End of the Historical Books
When well over three years ago I set sail on this voyage across the sea of the pages of the law and history of the Old Testament, I had no idea where setting sail on a ship called BRAGADAYJAH, would lead me; but I did ask the Lord to guide me and lead me where he would. My only commitment was to, as far as I was able, never to give up whatever obstacles came my way, until there was a clear and unmistakable indication that the Lord would have me go no further. In the process, there were many obstacles and many times I thought that I had come to an impassable end; but each time the Lord showed the way and I followed in the path He indicated. So that as I promised at the outset, I have never missed a day, come what may. Starting in the book of Genesis, we sailed through all the books of the law, and now at last to the end of the books of history the last of which is the book of Esther. Esther was one of the stars of the Old Testament, as the name Esther indicates. She became Queen of Persia during the reign of Ahasuerus, also known in history as Xerxes, who reigned from B. C. 486-465. Queen Esther was used by God to save his people the Jews from massacre, while been captives in the land of Persia. Lying ahead of this journey are the Poetical Books and the Books of Wisdom, while still further ahead are the books of the prophets. Where He will lead me, or should I say lead us, I do not really know. I can only say, wherever He leads, I will follow. Thanks to all who have remained on the journey with me.

Esther and Mordecai subordinate only to the king
The Jews then ordained and took upon them, and upon their seed, and unto all such as joined themselves unto them, so that it should not fail that they would keep these days, according to their writing, at the appointed time every year. That the days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, in every province, and in every city, and those days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the memorial of them perish from their seed. Then Esther the Queen herself wrote using her authority, to confirm this second letter of Purim. And letters were sent to all the Jews in all the hundred and twenty seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth. And the decree of Esther and Mordecai confirmed the letters of Purim and it was written in the records of the Persians. And King Ahasuerus laid a tribute upon the land and upon the isles of the sea. And all the acts of his power and his might and the declaration of the greatness of Mordecai whereby the king advanced him are recorded in the Chronicles of the kings of Media and of Persia. For Mordecai the Jew was next to king Ahasuerus and was great among the Jews and accepted by the multitude of his brethren, as he sought prosperity for all his people and peace for the generations to follow.

The Institution of Purim.
And Mordecai wrote letters unto all the Jews throughout the kingdom near and far to establish the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month Adar as a yearly celebration, being the days in which the Jews rested from their enemies; and the month which was turned from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a good day; that they should be made days of feasting and joy and of sending portions to the poor. And the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written unto them. Because Haman the enemy of the Jews had devised against them a plot to destroy them; but his plot was turned on its head and he and his sons were hanged instead. For when Esther the Queen became aware of the plot against her people, she had gone before the king. And the king had commanded by letters that Haman’s wicked device which he devised against the Jews should return upon his own head; and he and his sons were hanged on the gallows. So these days were called Purim after the name Pur.

The Jews Destroyed their enemies
Then the Jews smote all their enemies with the sword with slaughter and destruction; and did what they would against those that hated them. In Shushan the palace, they slaughtered five hundred men; including, ten sons of Haman the Jew hater; but they did not take any of the spoils. And the number that were slain in Shushan were brought before the king; and the king said to Esther the queen. “The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of Haman. What has been done in the rest of the king’s provinces? Do you have any further petition?” And Esther replied and said, “Now O king if it please thee, let it be granted to the Jews which are in Shushan to do tomorrow also according to the decree of the day and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged upon the gallows.” And the king acceded to Esther’s request, and the king gave an order that Haman’s ten sons be hanged upon the gallows. And the Jews in the other provinces gathered themselves together and slew on the thirteenth and fourteenth day seventy five thousand men; but took none of their spoils; and so on both days, the thirteenth and the fourteenth, they made a day of feasting and rejoicing. But the Jews that were at Shushan feasted for three days, on the thirteenth through the fifteenth. And the Jews outside in the un-walled towns made the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of feasting and gladness; a day on which they feasted and exchanged gifts.

Jews Rejoice for Mordecai.
And Mordecai went out from the king wearing royal apparel of blue and white and with a great crown of gold, and a garment of fine purple linen; and the city of Shushan especially the Jews, rejoiced and was glad for Mordecai, and was light-hearted and joyous and felt a sense of great honour. And in every province and ibn every city wherever the king’s commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and gladness, a feast and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews for the fear of the Jews fell upon them. Then on the twelfth month that is the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the month when the king’s commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have had power over them, though it was then reversed, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them. And the Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout the kingdom to lay hands on such that sought them; for the fear of the Jews fell upon them; for Mordecai was great in the king’s house and his fame went out throughout all the provinces; for he grew greater and greater.

Mordecai’s order in the name of the king published
So Mordecai wrote in the king’s name and sealed it with the king’s ring, and sent letters by horseback and riders on mules, and camels by which the king granted the Jews in every city, that they should stand together and stand up for their life to defend themselves and to destroy, to slay, to cause to perish any people that tried to assault them, in any place or province where they chanced to be; and to take the spoils of those who they thus defeated. And upon a single day within the province of king Ahasuerus namely upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month which is the month Adar was the order to take effect. And a copy of the writing was given as a commandment to every province, and published to all the people in a timely manner, that the Jews would have sufficient time to prepare to defend themselves against any assault as per the previous order of Haman.

And she said. “If it pleases the king, and lf I have found favor in thy sight, and if it seems right unto you, and it is pleasing before your eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman which he wrote with the intention of destroying the Jews, which are throughout the king’s provinces.” For also pleaded, “How can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people, or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?” Then the king Ahasuerus said unto Esther the Queen and to Mordecai the Jew. “Behold I have given Esther the house of Haman, and him they have hanged upon the gallows, because he laid his hands upon the Jews. Write thee, therefore for the Jews, as it pleases you, in the king’s name, and seal it with the king’s ring; for the writing which is written in the king’s name and sealed with the king’s ring may no more be reversed.” Then were the king’s scribes called at that time in the third month that is the month Sivan, on the three and twentieth day thereof and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews. And to the Lieutenants, and the deputies, and rulers of the province, unto every province which are part of Ethiopia a hundred and twenty seven provinces, to all provinces according to the language thereof, and to the Jews according to their language.

Then the king asked, “Is he trying to force himself upon the queen before me in this very house?” And immediately they covered Haman’s face; and Harbonah one of the chamberlains drew the king’s attention to the gallows that Haman had built for Mordecai; and the king ordered that Haman be hanged on that same gallows. So then at the appointed time, the king and Haman came to the banquet that queen Esther had prepared for them. And the king said to Esther on the second day of the banquet of wine, “What is thy petition queen Esther; and it shall be granted thee, and whatever thy request it shall be performed even to the half of the kingdom.” Then Esther the queen answered and said, “If I have found favor in thy sight, O king, and it please thee, let my life by given me and my people at my petition and my people at my request. For we are sold, I and my people to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my tongue although the enemy could not countervail the king’s damage.” Then the king answered and said unto Esther, “Who is he and where is he that doth presume in his heart to do so? And Esther told the king that the enemy the wicked one was no other than Haman; and hearing the queen’s words, Haman was very much afraid.”

Mordecai arrayed in Royal Attire
Based on Haman’s recommendation, the king told him to take his apparel, and his horse, and do in accordance to what he had said to be done to Mordecai the Jew, that sits at the king’s gate. So Haman took the riyal apparel and the horse and arrayed Mordecai and brought him on horseback through the streets of the city, and proclaimed before him. And afterwards Mordecai appeared again before the king’s gate; but Haman hurried to his house in fury, and mournfully with his head covered. And he told Zeresh and his wife and all his friends everything that had befallen him. And his wise men and Zeresh and his wife told Haman, that if Mordecai be of the seed of the Jews, before whom he had begun to fall, he would not prevail against him, but shall continue to fall. And while they were still talking among themselves, the king’s chamberlain came to take Haman hurriedly to the banquet that Queen Esther had prepared for him.

The King’s Insomnia
It happened that night the king could not sleep; and he commanded that the book of records chronicles be brought to him, and they were brought and read to the king. And it was found written in them the account of how Mordecai had informed the king via Esther of the treachery of Bigthan and Teresh two of the king’s chamberlains the keepers of the doors who had plotted to lay hold of the king, Ahasuerus. And the king enquired and asked what honour was accorded to Mordecai for his service to the king; and the king’s servants informed him that none was bestowed upon him. Then the king enquired with regard to who was in attendance at the court, and it Happened that at that very moment Haman had gone into the court of the king’s house to speak to the king with regard to his plan to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had constructed for him. And the king’s servant told him that Haman was in the court and so the king ordered that he should enter in. So Haman went in and the king asked him what should be done to the man in whom the king delighted to honour. And Haman thinking that the king was referring to him answered the king and said “Let the royal apparel of the king, and the horse that the king rides on, and the crown royal which he wears on his head, be bestowed on this most noble prince that the man in whom the king delights may be arrayed with these. That he may ride on horseback through the streets of the city and proclaim before him; so that this man in whom the king delights shall be known throughout the land.

Elated Haman deflated at sight of Mordecai.
Having left Esther and the king, Haman was full of joy and gladness at Esther’s invitation; but as he exited the gate he encountered Mordecai at the gate, and as usual he refused to rise or step aside in the presence of Haman; and so Haman was full of indignation against Mordecai. However, he refrained himself; and when he got home, he sent for his friends Zeresh and his wife. And he told them of the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things concerning which the king had promoted him, including advancing him over all the princes and servants of the king. He told them moreover of the banquet that Esther was preparing the next day exclusively for himself and the king. But he complained, all that meant nothing to him as long as he saw Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king’s gate. And Zerah and his friends suggested to Haman that a gallows be built fifty cubits high, and the next day when he is in the presence of the king, to advise the king that Mordecai should be hanged thereon. After that he was advised, he should go merrily unto the banquet and have a good time. And the idea pleased Haman very much; so he gave orders for the gallows to be built.

And looking out the king saw Esther standing in the court and seeing her moved him. And the king held out to her the royal scepter which was a sign that Esther had his permission to approach him. And Esther answered the king and told him that if it seemed good unto him to allow Haman and himself to appear at a banquet that she would prepare for him. Queen Esther learns of conspiracy.
When Mordecai realized all that was done, he rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city and cried with a loud and bitter cry. And he went before the king’s gate, although it was so that none could enter into the king’s gate so dressed. And in every province where the king’s decree was received there was mourning, fasting, and weeping among the Jews. And Esther’s maids and her chamberlain went and told Esther what was going on; and the news made her heart exceedingly sad and heavy. And she sent clothes to Mordecai with orders to take away the sackcloth from him but he refused. Then Esther called Hatach, one of the king’s chamberlains who had been appointed to attend unto her, and gave him a message for Mordecai, to tell her what the trouble was. So Hatach went to Mordecai while he was yet before the king’s gate. And Mordecai told him of all that had happened to him and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasures in return for destroying the Jews. Also he gave him to take to Esther a copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy the Jews, and told her that she should go in unto the king, and make supplication before him for the sake of her people. And so Hatach retuned and told Esther all that transpired with Mordecai.

Haman’s Decree to Kill all Jews.
Haman told king Ahasuerus that there was a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the provinces within the kingdom, whose laws were different from the laws of all other people, and that they did not keep the king’s laws; and it was not in his interest to allow those people to live the way they did. Therefore, he recommended, “Let it be written that they may be destroyed; and he would pay ten thousand talents of silver to those who have the charge of the matter to bring it into the king’s treasuries. And the king took his ring from his hand and gave it to Haman, the enemy of the Jews. And the king gave to Haman power to do to the Jews as he saw fit. Then on the thirteenth day of the first month, the king’s scribes wrote the law according to the dictates of Haman and sent it to all the lieutenants, the governors of the provinces, and to every ruler of the people throughout the kingdom, to kill and cause to perish all Jews, young, old, and little children, all in one day, on the thirteens day of the twelfth month which is the month Adar, and to take all of their property as spoil.” And satisfied that his aim was already accomplished, once a copy of the king’s decree was published abroad, he sat down to drink wine with the king.

In course of time, King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the son of Hammedatha, an Agagite and made set him above all the princes of the land. And all the king’s servants who came within the king’s gate bowed and reverenced Haman; for the king had commanded that all should do so. But Mordecai would not bow to him nor revere him. Then the king’s servants who were within the gate challenged Mordecai and asked him why he refused to pay homage to Haman in obedience to the king’s commandment. So eventually when he continued to ignore Haman, it was brought to Haman’s attention for Mordecai had informed them that he was a Jew. And on hearing the complaint Haman became very angry. So Haman thought how he could lay hands on Mordecai as well as all the Jews within the territory. And in the first month, the month Nisan, during the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus’ reign they cast lots before Haman every day from month to month until the twelfth month that is the month Adar.

Now when the turn of Esther the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai who had taken her for her daughter, was come to go before the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s chamberlain had given her. And Esther obtained favor in the sight of the king of all them that looked upon her. So Ether was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house on the tenth month which is the month Tebeth in the seventeenth year of his reign. The king loved Esther more than all the other women and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the others; and he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her Queen instead of Vashti. Mordecai
Now there was at the
palace at Shushan a certain man, a Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of
Jair, the son Shimie, the son of Kish a Benjamite. Mordecai had been carried
away from Jerusalem during the time of the captivity when Jeconiah king of
Judah who was carried away by Nebuchadnezzar into Babylonian captivity. And
Mordecai reared up Hadassah who was called Esther, his uncle’s daughter, for
Esther had neither father nor mother. Esther was a very beautiful girl and
Mordecai, after her father and mother were dead, brought her up as his own
daughter. So it came to pass that when the king’s commandment and his decree
had gone forth and many maidens had been gathered together at the palace at Shushan
and placed in the custody of Hegai, the King’s chambermaid; and Esther was also
brought forth unto the palace into her custody, with the other women. And Hegai
was pleased with the sight of Esther, and he gave her the things she needed for
purification and for her personal needs, and that of the seven maidens that
were her portion to attend her as per the kings orders. And Hegai gave to
Esther the best quarters and the best provisions because he liked her. In the
meantime, Esther had not revealed that she was of Jewish ancestry because
Mordecai had cautioned her not to. And day by day meanwhile, Mordecai walked before
the king’s court just to keep an eye out in case any evil should befall Esther.

The King’s advisers in proposing the decree deposing Queen Vashti, explained to him that the proposed decree would have the effect when it was made public, of ensuring that all the wives throughout the kingdom would honour and respect their husbands. And the recommendation pleased the king, and the princes, and the king made the decree as recommended to him. And he sent letters to all the kings of the provinces within his domain, and to every people in their language, stating that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should be published in the language of all the peoples. And after the king’s wrath had abated, he began to think of Vashti, what she had done, and the decree made against her. And the king’s servants perceiving where the king’s thoughts were leading him, suggested that there be a search for fair young virgins for the king throughout his domain, that all fair young virgins be brought together in the king’s palace at Shushan and given unto the custody of Hege, the king’s chamberlain, and keeper of the women, and let them be given the things they need for purification and beautification; so that from among them may be chosen, one that pleased the king.
