Elijah challengers the prophets of Baal
Having
Gathered all the people together, Elijah addressed them and said, “How long
shall ye halt between two opinions, if the Lord be God follow him; but if Baal,
then follow Baal.” And the people were silent and said not a word. Then said
Elijah unto the people, “I even I remain a prophet of the Lord. But Baalam’s
prophet are four hundred and fifty men. Therefore give us two bullocks; and let
them choose one bullock for themselves, and let them cut it in pieces and lay
it on wood, and put on fire under; and I will dress the other bullock and cut
it in pieces and put no fire under. And let the prophets of Baal call upon
their gods; and I will call upon the name of the Lord. And the God that answers
in fire let him be the God.” And all the people answered and said, “It is swell
spoken.” So Elijah told the prophets of Baal to go first, seeing they were
many. Choose one bullock he told them
and dress it and put it upon wood but put no fire under it, and call upon the
name of Baal your god, and let him send fire under it.
