Order of the Host – The
Service of the Merarites.
The sons of Merari were
numbered after their families by the house of their fathers, those who were
thirty years upwards to the age of fifty who entered into the service of the
tabernacle of the congregation. And the charge of their burden in the service
of the tabernacle of the congregation concerned the boards of the tabernacle,
the bars, sockets and pillars thereof. This included the pillars of the court
around it, their sockets, their pins and their cords, and all the instruments
thereof and all the necessary service thereto.
And all the service of the
sons of Merari as outlined were to be under the supervision of Ithamar the son
of Aaron the priest. And Moses and Aaron and the Chief of the congregation
numbered the sons of the Kohathites after their families and after the house of
their fathers between the age of thirty and fifty years; and the number of them
were two thousand seven hundred and fifty.
And the number of the
Gershonites were two thousand six hundred and thirty. And the number of them
who were of the house of Merari, three thousand two hundred. And so that the
number of the hosts of the Levites were eight thousand five hundred and eighty.
