Order of the Host – The
Families of Merari
Merari was the third of
Aaron’s sons; and his descendants were the Mahlites and the Mushites. And those
who were numbered of them of the males who were I month old and upwards were
six thousand and two hundred. And the head of the house of the families of
Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail; and their encampment was on the side of
the tabernacle northward. And under the custody and care of the Merari were the
boards of the tabernacle and the bars, the pillars, the sockets and all the
vessels thereof and appurtenances thereto including the pillars of the court
round about, their sockets, their pins and their cords.
Only Moses, Aaron and his
sons were to encamp on the East side of the tabernacle. And any stranger that went near unto the
tabernacle on the East side was to be put to death. And all who were numbered
of the Levites whom Moses and Aaron numbered by command of the Lord, throughout
their families, all the males who were I month old and upwards, were twenty two
thousand. More
