BRAGADAYJAH 1122
The Miracle of the shadow on the stairs.
So Isaiah spoke to Hezekiah and told him that the Lord had added
fifteen more years unto his life; and Isaiah the prophet became Isaiah the
doctor for he ordered that a lump of fig be placed over the boil that Hezekiah
had, and Hezekiah recovered. But Hezekiah asked Isaiah for a sign that the Lord
had healed him, and that he should go up to the house of the Lord on the third
day. And Isaiah said this is the sign from the Lord, The Lord will do the thing
that he has spoken. Shall the shadow go forward ten degrees or shall it go
backward ten degrees? And Hezekiah said it is an easy thing for the shadow to
go down ten degrees; but let the shadow go back upwards ten degrees. And Isaiah
the prophet cried unto the Lord and He brought the shadow ten degrees backwards
from which it had gone down in the dial of Ahaz. To understand the phrase and
the magnitude of the miracle, we need to understand the terms used here. The dial
actually refereed to a spiraled stairway and degrees refer to steps. Imagine
then the sun’s shadow cast on these steps, the stairs as it goes down.
Naturally as the sun went down it would descend step by step down one through
ten, and continue downwards. It would
have been impossible for the shadow to reverse itself and go up rather than
down. Hence Hezekiah’s choice of that scenario
to verify that he was in fact experiencing God’s intervention, a miracle.
