The death of Ahaz
And in many other ways did Ahaz defile the house and vessels of the
Lord; and he died and was buried in the city of David; and Hezekiah his son
reigned in his stead. Now in the seventeenth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea
son of Elah began to reign; and he reigned over Israel nine years. And he did
that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, although not to the extent of the
kings before him. And Shalmaneser of Assyria came up against him and Hoshea
submitted unto him and gave him presents. And after a while the king of Assyria
found out that Hoshea conspired against him for he had secretly sent messengers
to the king of Egypt and had sent no presents to the king of Assyria as was the
custom. So Shalmaneser shut him up and locked him in prison. Then the king swept
through all the land of Israel and went up to Samaria and besieged it for three
years. And in the ninth year of Hoshea, Shalmaneser took Israel and carried the
people away into Assyria and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of
Gozan and in the cities of the Medes
