So the children of Israel set about
finding wives for the children of Benjamin, and while they were gathered
together, they made enquire to see if any tribe other than Benjamin had failed
to attend the assembly of the congregation; and the people having been
numbered, it was discovered that none of the tribe of Jabesh-Gilead were
present. So the assembly selected twelve thousand armed men and commanded them
to go to Jabesh-Gilead and smite all the inhabitants thereof, both of men and
of women, save only such women that have never had any connection with any man,
and to take any such virgin women back to the congregation. And so the men of Israel found four hundred
such women, and took them back to the congregation. And the children of Israel
sent messengers to the men of Benjamin who had taken refuge at the rock Rimmon,
and to invite them to come to them so that they may be given wives of the women
taken from Jabesh-Gibeah.
