The Institution of Purim.
And Mordecai wrote letters unto all the Jews throughout the kingdom near and
far to establish the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month Adar as a
yearly celebration, being the days in which the Jews rested from their enemies;
and the month which was turned from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a
good day; that they should be made days of feasting and joy and of sending
portions to the poor. And the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as
Mordecai had written unto them. Because Haman the enemy of the Jews had devised
against them a plot to destroy them; but his plot was turned on its head and he
and his sons were hanged instead. For when Esther the Queen became aware of the
plot against her people, she had gone before the king. And the king had
commanded by letters that Haman’s wicked device which he devised against the
Jews should return upon his own head; and he and his sons were hanged on the
gallows. So these days were called Purim after the name Pur.
