Elated Haman deflated at sight of Mordecai.
Having left Esther and the king, Haman was full of joy and gladness at Esther’s
invitation; but as he exited the gate he encountered Mordecai at the gate, and
as usual he refused to rise or step aside in the presence of Haman; and so
Haman was full of indignation against Mordecai. However, he refrained himself;
and when he got home, he sent for his friends Zeresh and his wife. And he told
them of the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the
things concerning which the king had promoted him, including advancing him over
all the princes and servants of the king. He told them moreover of the banquet
that Esther was preparing the next day exclusively for himself and the king.
But he complained, all that meant nothing to him as long as he saw Mordecai the
Jew sitting at the king’s gate. And Zerah and his friends suggested to Haman
that a gallows be built fifty cubits high, and the next day when he is in the
presence of the king, to advise the king that Mordecai should be hanged
thereon. After that he was advised, he should go merrily unto the banquet and
have a good time. And the idea pleased Haman very much; so he gave orders for
the gallows to be built.
