Jephthah’s Case
Well yesterday was set forth what may be designated a lawyer’s theologian’s
rationalization of the respective cases of Jephthah and the Ammonite and
Moabite kings. But now let us look at
how Jephthah presented and justified his claim for possession. It is a long statement
of claim, so we will have to view it in instalments. Said Jephthah, “Israel
took not away the land of Moab nor the land of the children of Ammon. But when
Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness, unto the red sea,
and came to Kadesh, then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom saying, Let
us pass we pray thee through your land; but the king of Edom would not permit
us; and similarly we asked the king of Moab and he refused, and Israel abode in
Kadesh. And they went along through the wilderness and compassed the land of
Edom and the land of Moab, and came by the seaside of the land of Moab, and
pitched their tent on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border
of Moab; for Arnon was the border of Moab. And Israel sent messengers unto
Sihon, king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon, and Israel said unto him, Let
us pass we pray thee through thy land into my place. But Sihon trusted not
Israel to pass through his coast, and gathered all his troops together at Jahaz
and fought against Israel.
