So in accordance with their instructions the messengers of Balak
sought out Balaam with their odious message from their King to curse
Israel. No doubt Balak’s concept of
Balaam was his reputation as a false prophet who would do anything for money,
like so many false prophets of our day who are hungry for filthy lucre. So
Balak’s emissaries approached Balaam laden with gifts and bribes to beseech him
to move against God’s people.
Notwithstanding Balaam’s greed, he obviously was not unmindful of
the dangers not to mention the difficulties of his would be undertaking to
curse God’s people; but he could not even then turn down such a golden
opportunity to line his pockets; so he played for time. “Let me think about it
overnight, he said, and I will give you my answer in the morning; so the
messengers decided, or he invited them to spend the night at his mansion.
However, God was watching and hearing what was going on, so in the
night he paid Balaam a visit.
