BRAGADAYJAH 379
Clearly like in everything
else He does, God had an end in mind.
Number all the males over twenty who are able to go to war, He said; but
not the Levites whatever age. God had another task for the sons of Levi as we
shall see shortly; but in addition, God wanted to make it possible for us to
know how many able bodied men of war were there were at that time, as again the
reason for which we shall come to appreciate in due course.
So do not number them;
instead, appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the
vessels thereof, and over all the things that belong to it. They, (the
Levites), shall bear the tabernacle, and all the vessels thereof, and they
shall minister to it, and shall encamp all around about the tabernacle.
And when the tabernacle is
set forward, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tabernacle is to be
pitched the Levites shall set it up; and the stranger who comes near it shall
be put to death.
And the children of Israel shall
pitch their tents every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard
throughout their hosts, But the Levites shall encamp round about the tabernacle
of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of
Israel; and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony. And as God commanded, so did the children of
Israel.
