“God forbid,” explained the Reubenites, “that we should
rebel against the Lord our God, and turn away from following the Lord to build
an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifice, beside the
altar of the Lord our God.” And so when Phinehas the priest and the princes of
the thousands of Israel which were with him heard the words that the children
of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of the half tribe of
Manasseh spoke, that it pleased them. And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest
said unto them, “this day we perceive that you have not departed from following
after the Lord.”
