So Joshua spent many years in battle with the kings of the
surrounding nations, and there was none that made peace with the children of
Israel except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon, all others being
conquered in battle. For it was God’s
will that all the others would be destroyed in battle in that he hardened their
hearts and made them to wage war against Israel, that He might utterly destroy
them, not having found any favor with Him and left it to Joshua to destroy them,
as Moses commanded. And at that time came Joshua and cut off the Anakims from
the mountains from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab and from the mountains of Judah,
and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly and their cities.
There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: Only
in Gaza, and in Ashdod there remained. So Joshua took the whole land according
to all the LORD said unto Moses and Joshua gave it as an inheritance unto
Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from
war.
