BRAGADAYJAH 740
And then Gaal, the
son of Ebed came with his brethren and went over to Shechem, and the men of
Shechem confided in him. And they went out into the fields and gathered their
vineyards, and crushed the grapes and made merry, and went into the house of
their god and did eat and drink and cursed Abimelech. And Gaal the son of Ebed
said “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem that we should serve him? Is he not
the son of Jerubbaal and Zebul his officer? Who serve the men of Hamor the
father of Shechem; so why should we serve him?
And I wish to God this people were under my hand; then would I remove
Abimelech.” And he dared Abimelech to increase the size of his army and come
out. And when Zebul ruler of the city
heard the words of Gaal, the son of Ebed, he was very angered, and he secretly
sent messengers to Abimelech informing him of the words of Gaal and his friends,
and telling him they had come to Shechem and had fortified the city against
him. Therefore, Zebul advised Abimelech, “rise up in the night and together
with your men, lie in wait in the field. And in the early morning at sun rise,
attack the city and do unto Gaal and his company as they purposed to do to you.”
