BRAGADAYJAH 735
The Folly of Gideon
And Gideon made an ephod of the gold that was surrendered to him by the
men of Israel, and placed it in the city, Ophrah and all Israel went there
worshiping it which brought Gideon and his house to shame. Even so the
Midianites were subdued in the sight of the children of Israel, so that they
lifted up their heads no more; and for the next forty years, throughout the
reign of Gideon, the country was at peace. Then Jerubbaal, the son of Joash
went and dwelt in his own house; and Gideon had seventy sons; for he had many
wives. And one of Gideon’s concubines bore him a son whose name was Abimelech.
And Gideon died in a ripe old age and was buried in his father’s sepulcher in
the city Ophrah. And it happened that as soon as Gideon was dead the children
of Israel again turned to Baal to worship him as god remembering not the Lord of
their God who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies, and
showed no regard for the house of Gideon who had delivered them out of their
trouble with the Midianites.
