BRAGADAYJAH 734
Gideon’s first son Jether being yet in his teens, was reluctant to draw
sword against the two older men so they told Gideon to slay them himself; so
Gideon slew them both and stripped their camels of the ornaments that were
about their necks. Then the men of Israel told Gideon to rule over them, both
he and his sons for he had delivered them from the hand of Midian. And Gideon told them, that he would not rule
over them, neither would his sons, but that the Lord would rule over them. But
said Gideon, I have a request for you, that every one of you would give me the
earrings of his prey; for indeed they all had golden earrings as they were
Ishmaelites. And they replied and said, “We
will willingly give them.” So they spread a garment on the ground and everyone
threw his earring taken from his prey on it. And the weight of the earrings so
collected was a thousand seven hundred shekels of gold beside ornaments and
other jewelry and fine garments worn by the kings of Median and beside the
chains that were about the camels’ necks.
