Amaziah’s retribution
Now in the second year of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel reigned
Amaziah son of Joash King of Judah. He
was twenty and five years old when he began to reign and he reigned twenty nine
years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. And
Amaziah did that which was right in the sight of the Lord although not to the extent
of his father David, but followed in the way of his father Joash. He did not
take away the high places and so the people used them to sacrifice to other
gods. And as soon the kingdom was established in his hand, he slew the servants
who had slain the king his father. But the children of the murderers he slew
not as written in the laws of Moses wherein the Lord commanded that the father
shall not be put to death for the sins of the children, nor the children be put
to death for the sins of the father; but every man shall be put to death for
his own sin. So he slew in Edom, in the valley of salt ten thousand and took
Selah by war and called the name of it Joktheel.
