Athaliah Jehoahaz’s Mother Took the Throne.
And so it came to pass that even in the days of Jehu king of Israel,
the Lord began to diminish the borders of Israel; and Hazael smote them all
along their border along the coasts. And in that time Jehu died having reigned
over Israel twenty eight years; and was buried in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son
reigned in his stead; but he died soon after; and when Athaliah Jehoahaz’s
mother saw that he was dead, she rose up and destroyed all the royal seed. But
Jehosheba the daughter of Joram sister of Ahaziah took Joash, the son of
Ahaziah, and hid him away in the bedchamber together with his nurse; so that he
was not slain. And he remained hidden for six years, while in the meantime Athaliah
reigned over Israel. And in the seventh year, Jehoiada the priest gathered
together all the rulers over hundreds together with the captains and the guards
into the house of the Lord and made a covenant with them and showed them the
king’s son. And he commanded them that a third of them shall enter in on the Sabbath
day, and keep watch over the king’s house; and a third shall watch over the
gate of Sur, and the other third at the gate behind the guard, so that the king’s
house be completely surrounded and defended.
