BRAGADAYJAH 1079
God caused the Syrians to flee
No one was found in the Syrian camp because the Lord had made them to hear the
noise of chariots and of horses like the sound of a great host, and they thought
to themselves that the king of Israel had hired a great host, the Hittites and
the Egyptians to fight against them. So they arose and fled in the twilight and
left their tents and their horses and all their very camp as it was set up and
fled for their lives. So when the lepers had gone to the uttermost parts of the
camp they entered a tent and ate and drank and took from there, silver and gold
and clothing and sent and hid it. And they returned a second time and took from
another tent more booty and went and hid it likewise. Then they reasoned among
themselves and decided that it would not be wise to remain in the camp until
morning; but rather that they should get word to the king’s household. So they
went and called to the porter of the city and told him that they went to the
camp of the Syrians and found no man there, except horses and asses tied, and
the tents as they were. And the porters told the king what was told to them.
But when the king heard the news, he did not believe it. He thought that the
Syrians knowing they were hungry, had left their camp and hid themselves, and were
lying in wait for them to enter when they would suddenly pounce on them. But
0ne of the king’s servants advise him it would do no harm if a small contingent
were to be sent in to see what was going on and the king agreed.
