A
Word about Inheritance
Now
the chief fathers of the families of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir,
the son of Manasseh of the families of the sons of Joseph, came to Moses and
the elders of the children of Israel and reminded them that the Lord had
commanded that the land was to be given by lot to the children of Israel, and
that Moses was commanded by God to give the inheritance of Zelophehad their
brother unto his daughters. But that if they were married to the sons of any of
the other tribes of Israel then shall their inheritance be taken from the
inheritance of their fathers, and be put to the inheritance of the tribes from
which they were received and be taken from the lot of their inheritance.
And
when the Jubilee of the children of Israel shall come around then shall their
inheritance be put with the inheritance of the tribe from which they had received
them and so taken away from the inheritance of their fathers.
And
Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the Lord and
said, “The tribe of the sons of Joseph has well spoken.” This is what the Lord
has commanded regarding the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘let them marry to
whomsoever they think best; but only to the tribe of the father of their family
shall they marry, so that the inheritance of the children of Israel shall not
move from the tribe; for every inheritance of the children of Israel shall remain
within the inheritance of Israel. And
every daughter who possesses an inheritance shall marry only to a member of one
of the tribes of Israel in order to keep the inheritance.
