BRAGADAYJAH
474
And
after that, God instructed Moses and Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest and
told them to number all the young men of Israel from the age of twenty years
old and upwards who were able to go to war.
And
Moses and Eleazar spoke to the people in the plains of Moab by the Jordon near Jericho
saying, “Take the sum of the people from twenty years old and upwards as the
Lord commanded Moses. And all the people
were numbered by their families and the sum of all of them were 601, 730, a
number which did not include any of those whom Moses and Aaron had numbered
when they numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai; for the
Lord had said, they shall surely die in Sinai and not one of them was left of
them save Caleb and Joshua.
After
that the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son
of Machir, the son of Manasseh of the family of Manasseh the son of Joseph,
whose names were, Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah, lodged a complaint
before Moses and Eleazar and the whole congregation of Israel, saying, “Our
father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them who had
gathered themselves against the Lord in the company of Korah, but died in his
own sins and had no sons. Why therefore should the name of our father be done
away with because he had no sons? Give us, therefore, a possession among the
brethren of our father.”
Therefore,
Moses brought their cause before the Lord.
And the Lord old Moses, that the daughters spoke rightly. “Therefore
thou shall give them the possession of their father among his brethren and you
must make sure his possession passes to them.”
“Therefore
speak unto the children of Israel and tell them that henceforth if a man dies
and has no son, then his inheritance shall pass to his daughter; and if he has
no daughter his inheritance goes to his brothers; and if he has no brothers
then his inheritance should pass to his father’s brothers; and if his father
has no brothers then his possession shall pass to his kinsman who is next to
him of his family. And this shall be a
law forever. “
