Law of
Possession of the Land.
Now
the Lord told Moses to tell the children of Israel, that when they would have
passed over Jordan, to possess the land of Canaan which he had promised to give
to them, they should drive out all the inhabitants of the land before them,
they should destroy all their stone idols, their melted images, and demolish
all their high places.
That
they should dispossess the inhabitants of the land; for he had given it to
them.
Then
the land was to be divided up by lots for an inheritance based on the numerical
size of each family, so that the larger family should get more and the smaller
family should get less; and every man’s inheritance should be in accordance
with where he falls in their father’s
family line.
However,
the Lord told Moses, if they should fail to drive out the inhabitants then
those who they allowed to remain shall vex them; they shall be like barbs in their
eyes and thorns in their sides in the land of their possession; and besides,
said the Lord, “I shall do unto you as I thought to do unto them,”
