Instructions for the Ark of the Covenant and for the mercy
seat are complete; so now the Lord turns to the Table of showbread.
“Thou shall
also make a table of acacia wood, two cubits long, one cubit wide and one and a
half cubits high.” The table was to be
overlaid with gold and have a golden rim around it; the table was to have a
border around it a handbreadth in width, with a golden edge around the border.
In addition
the table was to have four rings of gold, and the rings placed on the four
corners corresponding with the four legs thereof; and over against the border
the rings were to be placed for fitted staves to bear the table.
The
instructions for the staves were that they were to be made of acacia wood,
overlaid with gold, that they may be used to carry the table,
Upon the
table were to be various utensils, dishes, spoons, bowls, and covers, all made
of pure gold; and upon the table was to be showbread, which should always be
placed there.
The
showbread was a type of Christ; the bread of God. It also symbolized that manna, angel food,
which came down from heaven. It also typified that bread of heaven, the germ of
wheat ground in the mill of suffering, and brought in to the fire of judgment.
So
the showbread was a perpetual symbol of the Christ, the bread of life, who was
to come down from heaven. More www.chaberbooks.com
