The Priesthood
Take Aaron your brother, and his sons, said the Lord, and
have them minister to me in the office of the Priesthood; and make holy
garments for Aaron; garments for glory and of beauty. Speak unto all the wise
men who I have filled with the Spirit of wisdom, to make Aaron’s garments of
consecration that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.
The
garments for the priestly office consisted of a breastplate, an ephod, a robe,
an embroidered coat, a miter and a girdle. These were the holy garments that
Aaron and his sons were to wear, in their priestly offices; they were to be
holy garments; and they were to be made of fine linen of gold, blue, purple and
scarlet.
The Ephod, was
to be made of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet, fine linen, and skillfully
woven, with two shoulder pieces, shoulder straps, joined at the two edges,
sides, thereof, all of gold, and blue, and purple, and scarlet.
The girdle
of the ephod was to be beautifully woven and shall also be of gold, blue,
purple and scarlet. In addition there were commanded to be made, two engraved onyx
stones engraved with the names of the children of Israel according to their
births, six names on one stone and six on the other, all set in gold.
The two
stones were to be placed on the shoulders of the ephod as memorial stones unto
the children of Israel ,
so that Aaron would bear their names before the Lord upon his two shoulders for
a memorial.
Finally
there were to be settings of gold, attached to the braided work and fastened to
the settings. These were God’s directions for the priestly garments comprising
the ephod and its adornment and appendages.
