Psalm 74 Maschil of Asaph
God’s People Cry for Help. Part I
O God, why hast thou cast me off forever? Why dost thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture? Remember thy congregation which thou hast purchased of old, the rod of thine inheritance which thou hast redeemed, this mount Zion wherein thou hast dwelt. Lift up thy feet upon the perpetual desolations, even all that the enemy has done wicmkedly in the sanctuary. Thy enemies roar in the midst of thy congregation, they set up their ensigns for signs. A man was famous according as he lifted up axes upon the thick trees; but now they break down the curved work thereof at once with axes and hammers. They have cast fire into thy sanctuary, they have defiled by casting down thy dwelling place of thy name to the ground. They said in their hearts, “Let us destroy them together.” They have burnt up all the synogogues of God in the land. We see not our signs; there is no more any prophet, neither is there any among us that knoweth how long. O God how long shall the adversary reproach, shall the enemy blaspheme thy name forever? Psalm 73 A Psalm of Asaph Part II
If I say I will speak thus, behold I will offend against the generation of thy children. When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me. Until I went into the sanctuary of God, then understood I their end. Surely thou didst set them in slippery places, thou castedest them down into destruction. How are they brought into desolation as in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors. As a dream when one awaketh, so O Lord when thou awakes thou shall despise their image. Thus my heart was grieved and I was pricked in my reins. So foolish was I and ignorant I was as a beast before thee. Nevertheless I am continually with thee; thou hast holden me with thy right hand. Thou shall guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me in glory. Whom have I in heaven but thee? And there is none on earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever. For Lo, they that are far from thee shall perish; thou hast destroyed all them that go awhoring from thee. But it is good for me to draw near to God. I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works.

Psalm 73 A Psalm of Asaph
Truly God is good to Israel even to such as are of a clean heart. But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped; for I was envious of the foolish when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no bands in their death, but their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as with other men, neither are they plagued as other men. Therefore, pride compasseth about as a chain, violent covereth them as a garment. Their eyes stand out with fatness; they have more than heart could wish. They are corrupt and speak wickedly concerning oppression; they speak loftily. They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth. Therteore his people return hither and water of a full cup are wrung out to them. And they say how doth God know? And is there knowledge in the most high? Behold these are the ungodly who prosper in the world; they increase in riches. Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain and washed my hand in innoncency. For all the day long have been plagued and chastened every morning.

Messiah’s glorious kingdom: Paret II
Yea all kings shall fall down before Him, all nations shall serve Him. For He shall deliver the needy, when he crieth, the poor also and he that has no helper. He shall spare the poor and needey and shall save the souls of the needy. He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence and precious shall their blood be in His sight. And he shall live and to him shall He give the gold of Sheba. Prayer also shall be made for him continually and daily shall He be praised. There shall be a handful of corn in the earth on top of the mountain; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanaon, and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth. His name shall endure for ever, His name shall continue as long as the sun, and men shall be blessed in him and all nations shall call Him blessed. Blessed be the Lord God the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be his glorious name for ever; and let the whole earth be filled with His glory, amen and amen. My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all thje day; for I know not the numbers thereof I will go in the strength of the Lord God. I will make mention of thy righteousness even of thine only. O God thou hast taught me from my youth; and thitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God forsake me not; until I have shewed thy styrength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come. Thy righteousness also O God is very high who hast done great things O God who is like unto thee? Thou which hast shewed me great and sore troubles shalt quicken me again and shalt bring me up again from the depth of the earth. Thou shalt increase my greatness and comfort me on every side. I will also praise thee with the psaltery even thy truth. O my God; unto thee will I sing unto thee with the harp. O thou Holy One of Israel. My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee, my soul which thou hast redeemed, my tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long; for they are confounded; for they are brought unto shame that seek my hurt.

In Thee O Lord, do I put my trust, let me never be put to confusion. Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape; incline thine ear unto me and save me. Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort. Thou hast given commandment to save me, for thou art my rock and my fortress. Deliver me O God out of the hand of the wicked. Out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteousness and cruel man. For thou art my hope, O Lord God, thou art my trust from my youth. By thee have I been holden up from the womb, thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels, my praise shall be continually of thee. I am a wanderer unto many; but thou art my strong refuge. Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thine honour all the day. Cast me not off in the time of old age, forsake me not when my strength faileth. For mine enemies speak against me, and they that lay wait for my soul take counsel together; Saying, God has forsaken him, persecute and take him for there is none to deliver him. O God be not far from me, O my God make haste for my help. Let them be confounded and consumed that are adversaries of my soul, let them be covered with reproach and dishonor that seek my hurt. Let their eyes be darkened that they see not, and let their loins continually to shake. Pour out thine indignation upon them and let their wrathful anger take hold on them. Let their habitation be desolate and none dwell in their tents. For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded. Add iniquity unto their iniquity and let them not come into thy righteousness. Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous. But I am poor and sorrowful, let thy salvation, O God, be set me up on high. I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. This also shall please the Lord, better than ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs. The humble shall see this and be glad, and your heart shall live that seek God. For the Lord heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners. Let heaven and earth praise Him; the seas and everything that moveth therein . My throat is dried, my eyes fail while I wait upon my God. They that hate me without a cause are more than the haris of my head. They that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty; then I restored that which I took not away. O God thou knowest my foolishness, and my sins are not hid from thee. Let not them that wait on thee O Lord, God of host be ashamed. For my sake, let not them that seek thee be confounded. For my sake O God of Israel, because for thy sake I have borne reproach, shame has covered my face; I am become a stranger unto my brothren, and an alien unto my mother’s children. For the zeal of thine house, eaten me up, and the reproaches of them that reproached them are fallen upon me. When I wept and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach, I made sachcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them. They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards. But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O God in an acceptable time, in the multitude of thy mercy, hear me in the truth of thy salvation. [ To be continued

A Cry for God’s Vengeance
Do ye indeed speak righteousness O congregation? Do you judge uprightly O ye sons of men? Yea in heart ye work, wickedness, ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth. The wicked are estranged from the womb, they go astray as soon as they are born speaking lies. Their poison is like the poison of a serpent, they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth the ear, which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming ever so wisely. Break their teeth O God, in their mouth, break out the great teeth of the young lion O Lord. Let them melt away as waters which run continuously when he bindeth the bow to shoot his arrows; let them be as cut in pieces. As a snail which melteth, let everyone of them pass away. Like the untimely birth of a woman that they may not see the sun. Before your pots can feel the thorn, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living and in his wrath. The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth his vengeance, he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. So that a man shall say, verily there is a reward for the righteous, verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.

Psalm 57: Trust in God Amid Trouble.
Be merciful unto me O God, be merciful unto me; for my soul trusteth in thee, yea in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be past. I will cry unto God Most High, unto God that performeth all things for me. He shall send from heaven and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. God shall send forth His mercy and His truth. My soul is among lions, and I lie even among them that are set on fire. Even the sons of men whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword. Be thou exalted O God above the heavens, let thy glory be above all the earth. They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down; they have digged a pit for me, in the midst whereof they have fallen themselves. My heart is fixed O God, my heart is fixed. I will sing and give praise. Awake up my glory, awake, psaltery and harp, I myself will awake early. I will praise thee O Lord among the people, I will sing unto thee among the nations. For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds. Be thou exalted O God above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth.

Psalm 56: A Psalm of David
Reliance upon God.
Be merciful unto me O God, for man would swallow me up. He fighting daily oppresseth me. My enemies would daily swallow me up, for they be many that fight against me. O thou most high. What time I am afraid I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his name, in God I have put my trust. I will not fear what man can do unto me. Every day they wrest my words, all their thoughts are against me for evil. They gather themselves together, they hide themselves; they make my steps. When they wait for my soul, shall they escape by iniquity? In thine anger cast down the people, O God. Thou telleth my wanderings put thou my tears into thy bottle. Are they not in thy book? When I cry unto thee, then shall my enemies turn back. This I know for God is for me. In God will I praise his word; in the Lord will I praise his word. In God have I put my trust, I will not be afraid, what man can do unto me. Thy vows are upon me O God, I will render praise unto thee. For thou hast delivered my soul from death. Wilt thou not deliver my feet from falling that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

Psalm 55 A Psalm of David
A Complaint against a false Friend. Part II
We took sweet counsel together and waked unto the house of God in company. Let death seize upon them and let them go down quick into hell; for wickedness is in their dwellings and among them. As for me I call upon God and the Lord shall save me. Evening, morning and at noon, will I pray and cry aloud; and he shall hear my voice. He has delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me for many were with me. God shall hear and afflict them even he that abideth of old because they have no changes; therefore, they fear not God. He has put forth his hand against such as be at peace with him, he has broken his covenant. The words of his mouth was smoother than butter; but war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil; yet they were drawn swords. Cast thy burdens upon the Lord and he shall sustain thee, He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. But thou O God shall bring them down into the pit of destruction. Bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I shall trust in thee.

Psalm 55: A Psalm of David
A complaint concerning false friends. Part I.
Give ear unto my prayer O God, and hide not thyself from my supplication. Attend unto me and hear me. I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise. because of the voice of the enemy, because of the opposition of the wicked; for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me. My heart is sore pained within me, and the terrors of death are fallen upon me. Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me; and I said, O that I had wings like a dove, for then would I fly away and be at rest. Lo then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. I would hasten my escape from the windy storm, and tempest. Destroy O Lord and divide their tongues; for I have seen violence and strife in the city. Day and night they go about it on the walls thereof; mischief and sorrow also are in the midst of it. Wickedness is in the midst thereof; deceit and guile depart not from her streets, for it was not an enemy that reproached me, then I would have borne it, neither was it he that hated me, that did magnify magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him. But it was thou; a man mine equal, my guide and my acquaintance.
