BRAGADAYJAH 799
Now there was a man of Ramathaim-Zophim
of mount Ephraim whose name was Elkanah.
Elkanah had two wives Hannah and Peninnah. Peninnah had children; but Hannah was barren
and had no children. And every year Elkanah took time out to go to the Lord’s house
at Shiloh to worship and sacrifice unto the Lord of Hosts. And the two sons of
Peninnah Eli and Hophni all went up together to the temple of the Lord. And Elkanah would give to his wife Peninnah
and her two sons portions; but to Hannah he gave a very generous portion; for
he loved his wife Hannah although she could not bear children. And so Peninnah
would provoke Hannah sorely, and mocked her because the Lord had stopped up her
womb so that she could not bear children; which of course made Hannah very sad
and cheerless.
