Continuing
with his warnings and exhortations following upon this second giving of the
law, as the name Deuteronomy implies, Moses continued
“Thou
shall fear the Lord your God and serve Him and swear by His name. You shall not go after other gods, or the
gods of the people all around you. For
the Lord your God is a jealous God, and to prevent the anger of the Lord your
God be kindled against you and destroy you off the face of the earth, you shall
not put the Lord your God to the test as you did in Masah. You shall diligently keep the commandments of
the Lord your God together with His testimonies and His statutes which He has
commanded; always doing that which is good and right in His sight that He may dwell
with you, and that you may go in and possess the land which the Lord swore to give
to your fathers, having cast out all your enemies before you.”
“And
when your son asks you in time to come and say, what is the meaning of all
these commandments and statues and ordinances?” You shall be able to say unto
them “We were Pharaoh’s slaves in the land of Egypt and the Lord brought us out
of Egypt with a mighty hand. And the Lord
showed us signs and wonders great and severe upon Egypt and upon Pharaoh and
upon all his household before our eyes.
And He brought us up out from there that He might bring us in to give us
this good land which He swore unto our fathers.
And so the Lord commanded us to keep all these His commandments and
statutes, and ordinances, to fear Him always, that He might preserve us alive
as of this day; for it is our righteousness to do as God commands in all these
things.”
