Moses
Must Die on this Side of the Jordan
Moses
reminded the children of Israel that it was up to them to go over and possess
the land of Canaan after wandering in the wilderness for forty years. But he warned them to keep the commandments,
statutes and ordinances of the Lord their God, using his own example as a point
of reference, and pointing out his own consequence because he had disobeyed the
Lord.
“I
shall die in this land, and not go over the Jordan,” Moses told them,” but you
must go over and possess that good land.”
Therefore,
take heed to yourselves less when you get there you forget the covenant of the
Lord your God which He made with you, and make you any carved idol which the
Lord has forbidden. For the Lord your God is a consuming fire and a jealous
God.”
“If
when you enter into the promised land and have children, and your children
shall have children, and you forget after you have remained long in the land,
and make any carved image or any likeness of any graven image and do wickedly
and corrupt yourselves, and provoke the Lord to anger, I call heaven and earth
to witness against you this day that you shall soon utterly perish from off the
land. Your days shall not be prolonged upon it; but you shall be utterly
destroyed.
