Commentary Conclusion
Josiah’s Reaction to the Reading of the Law.
In talking about king Josiah let us not forget that his father before
him was Amon who the scriptures described as a wicked king who did evil in the
sight of the Lord in following in the footsteps of Manasseh who was one of the
most wicked of all. So young Josiah took over the mantle when he was just
eight, and after eighteen years he turned his attention to repairing the house
of the Lord and it was thus that the book, the scroll really containing the
words of the law was found. All this time there was a priest; so one is left to
wonder what was the priest doing why the word of God was not been read, but
leaves no wonder why the people had fallen into sin through the neglect of
knowing and or adhering to the word of God, not unlike this very day. So Josiah
was in sorrow for the word of the Lord so he wept to show his sorrow for the
sins of the people and he tore his clothes as a sign of distress. The word of
God was right there in the temple; it was nigh unto the priest, it was nigh unto
the people; but it might as well have been a thousand miles away. Lots of
people have bibles in their homes; but in many cases they sit there somewhere
gathering dust. I aver that today you can go to many churches Sunday after
Sunday and never see a bible opened by the congregation. Yet we call ourselves
Christians and sit and wonder why sin is so prevalent in the world. As the
Apostle Paul in writing the Book of Romans, “Therefore by the deeds of the law
shall no flesh be justified in his sight; for by the law is the knowledge of
sin. (Rom 3:20) Tomorrow we will resume with the rest of Josiah’s actions with
regard to the temple discovery.
