BRAGADAYJAH 989
Solomon asked God for a discerning heart
Then Solomon made a pact with the King of Egypt and took
Pharaoh’s daughter and brought her into the city of David while he was building
his own house. And the house of the Lord and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
And at that time the people worshipped in high places because there was no
house built unto the name of the Lord. And Solomon loved the Lord and followed
the ways of his father David, and sacrificed and burnt offerings in high
places. And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great
high place, and there he offered a thousand burnt offerings upon the altar. And
at Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream at night in which he asked
him, what he would ask of him. And Solomon said unto the Lord, “Thou hast shown
to my father David great mercy, according as he walked before you in truth, and
in righteousness, and with uprightness of heart. And thou hast kept for him
great kindness; and you have given him a son to sit on the throne as it is this
day. And now O Lord, my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David
my father; and I am but a little child; I know not how to go out or come in; and
I am in the midst of thy people upon whom thou hast chosen, a great people that
cannot be numbered or counted for multitude. Give therefore thy servant an understanding
heart to judge thy people that I may discern between good and evil; for who is
able to judge so great a people?” And the speech pleased the Lord that Solomon
had asked as he did.
