Three of the Great Captains with David
It is well said, “No man is an island.” Every man, great
though he may be, needs someone other than himself. Of course man needs God;
but every man, also needs someone beside himself. Adam the first man needed
Eve, the kings and rulers of the earth need men in their kingdom; a general
needs men in his army. David was a great man.
He had God, who gave him great power over both his people Israel, and
also over his enemies more so. When Saul was killing his thousands, David was
killing his ten thousands. But the Bible
says he also had great men with him. The Tachmonites that sat in the seat as
chief among the captains, one of whose name was Adino the Eznite, who lifted up
his spear among 800 men and slew them all at once. And after him was Eleazar
the son of Dodo the Ahohite was also one of the three mighty men that were with
David when he defied the Philistines when they gathered themselves against him
when the men of Israel were away. He rose and smote the Philistines until his
hand grew weary; but the Lord gave him a great victory that day. And after him
was Shammah the son of Agee, the Hararite, who when the Philistines were
gathered together in a troop, so that the people fled from the Philistines, he
stood in the midst of a lentil field and defended it and slew the Philistines,
the Lord giving him a great victory.
