BRAGADAYJAH 441
Moses then spoke to the congregation
and told them that they were about to see whether he was the one appointed by
God to do all he had been doing or not, assuring them that whatever he did was
not according to his own idea, but in accordance with what God wanted him to
do.
So, said Moses, “if these men
die the common death after the manner of all men, or if they suffer as men
ordinarily suffer, then you will know that the Lord has not called me;” but if the Lord does a new thing, and the
earth open her mouth and swallow them up and their houses and all the men that
follow them and everything they own go down into hell with them alive then you
shall know that these men provoked the Lord.
And it happened that as soon
as Moses had finished speaking, the earth opened up under them and swallowed
them up and they disappeared and they all perished from among the congregation
of Israel.
Upon seeing this those who
were gathered around fled for their lives and fire came down from heaven and
devoured all the two hundred and fifty men who dared to appear before the Lord
with their censors of fire and incense.
