The
Day of Atonement
And
the Lord spoke to Moses after the death of Aaron’s two sons and told him to
tell Aaron his brother, never to appear at any time into the holy place within
the veil of the temple before the mercy seat which is upon the ark that he may
not die. For said the Lord, “I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat. Only thus shall Aaron come into the holy
place; he shall bring a young bullock for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt
offering. He shall put on the holy linen
coat, and the linen breeches upon his flesh, and be girdled with a linen girdle
and the linen miter; these are holy garments; therefore before he puts them on,
he shall wash his flesh in water.”
“He
shall also take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the
goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering. And Aaron shall offer his bullock for a sin
offering for himself, and make atonement for himself and his household.”
“And
he shall take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the door of the
tabernacle of the congregation. And he shall cast lots upon the two goats, one
lot for the Lord and the other for a scapegoat. And he shall then take the goat
upon which the Lord’s lot fell and offer it as a sin offering. But the goat
upon which the lot fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the
Lord to make an atonement with it and let it go for a scapegoat into the
wilderness. More
