Sabbath of Rest Restored
Then Nehemiah saw some treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in
sheaves, and laden asses, and also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of
burdens which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, and he testified
against them in the day when they sold victuals. There were also living there
men of Tyre, also those who brought fish and all manner of ware, and sold on
the Sabbath unto the children of Judah in Jerusalem. Then Nehemiah challenged
the nobles of Judah, and asked them what evil thing they were doing, in
profaning the Sabbath day. He asked them, “Did not your fathers do the same
thing, and did God not bring all this evil upon us and upon this city?” “And
now you bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the Sabbath.” And it came to pass that when the gates of
Jerusalem began to be dark before the Sabbath, Nehemiah commanded that the
gates be shut and ordered that they should not be opened until after the
Sabbath. And some of his servants set
him at the gate that there should no burden be brought on the Sabbath day. So
the servants and sellers of all the wares lodged within Jerusalem once or
twice. Then Nehemiah again testified against them and asked them why they were
lodging against the wall. “Should you do so again I shall have you arrested,”
he warned them. So from that time forth they came no more on the Sabbath. So Nehemiah commanded the Levites that they
should cleanse themselves, and that they should keep the gates to sanctify the
Sabbath day.
