Acts of Benevolence and Mercy
In
addition said the Lord: The father shall not be put to death for the wrongdoing
of his children, neither should the children be punished for the wrongdoing of
their father; for every man shall bear his own sin. The course of justice must
not be perverted; nor the fatherless not the widow; and not take a widow’s clothing
for pledge. For you should remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, and it
was the Lord your God who redeemed you out from there; therefore I command you
to remember this. When you cut down your
harvest in the field, and has forgotten a sheave there, do not return to
retrieve it. Leave it there for the fatherless
and the widow, that the Lord may bless you.
When you beat your olive trees, do not go over the boughs again to make
pure that nothing is left behind; anything left behind is for the sojourner,
the fatherless and the widow. When you gather the grapes from your vineyard do
not glean it afterwards; whatever is missed is for the sojourner, the
fatherless and the widow; for remember you were once a slave in Egypt before
the Lord God delivered you with a mighty hand.
