Mercy
Towards the Poor
The
Lord commanded that when you lend anything to one of your neighbor, you are not
to go into his house to fetch it out; instead, wait outside until he brings it
out to you. And if he is poor, you must
not sleep with his pledge if it is something he needs to keep him warm or to
cover himself with or lie on; in any such case you must return it to him before
the sun goes down that he may sleep with his own raiment and bless you and so
the Lord would hold you righteous in His sight. Do not oppress the hired
servant who is poor and needy, be it be one of your brethren, or a stranger who
is dwelling in the land. Or within your gate.
At the appointed time you must pay him his wages before the sun goes
down; for he is poor and sets his heart upon his wages, so that he does not cry
unto the Lord and it be counted sin against you.
