Queen Esther learns of conspiracy.
When Mordecai realized all that was done, he rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city and cried with a loud and bitter cry. And he went before the king’s gate, although it was so that none could enter into the king’s gate so dressed. And in every province where the king’s decree was received there was mourning, fasting, and weeping among the Jews. And Esther’s maids and her chamberlain went and told Esther what was going on; and the news made her heart exceedingly sad and heavy. And she sent clothes to Mordecai with orders to take away the sackcloth from him but he refused. Then Esther called Hatach, one of the king’s chamberlains who had been appointed to attend unto her, and gave him a message for Mordecai, to tell her what the trouble was. So Hatach went to Mordecai while he was yet before the king’s gate. And Mordecai told him of all that had happened to him and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasures in return for destroying the Jews. Also he gave him to take to Esther a copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy the Jews, and told her that she should go in unto the king, and make supplication before him for the sake of her people. And so Hatach retuned and told Esther all that transpired with Mordecai.

Haman’s Decree to Kill all Jews.
Haman told king Ahasuerus that there was a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the provinces within the kingdom, whose laws were different from the laws of all other people, and that they did not keep the king’s laws; and it was not in his interest to allow those people to live the way they did. Therefore, he recommended, “Let it be written that they may be destroyed; and he would pay ten thousand talents of silver to those who have the charge of the matter to bring it into the king’s treasuries. And the king took his ring from his hand and gave it to Haman, the enemy of the Jews. And the king gave to Haman power to do to the Jews as he saw fit. Then on the thirteenth day of the first month, the king’s scribes wrote the law according to the dictates of Haman and sent it to all the lieutenants, the governors of the provinces, and to every ruler of the people throughout the kingdom, to kill and cause to perish all Jews, young, old, and little children, all in one day, on the thirteens day of the twelfth month which is the month Adar, and to take all of their property as spoil.” And satisfied that his aim was already accomplished, once a copy of the king’s decree was published abroad, he sat down to drink wine with the king.

Haman’s Plot against the Jews.
In course of time, King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the son of Hammedatha, an Agagite and made set him above all the princes of the land. And all the king’s servants who came within the king’s gate bowed and reverenced Haman; for the king had commanded that all should do so. But Mordecai would not bow to him nor revere him. Then the king’s servants who were within the gate challenged Mordecai and asked him why he refused to pay homage to Haman in obedience to the king’s commandment. So eventually when he continued to ignore Haman, it was brought to Haman’s attention for Mordecai had informed them that he was a Jew. And on hearing the complaint Haman became very angry. So Haman thought how he could lay hands on Mordecai as well as all the Jews within the territory. And in the first month, the month Nisan, during the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus’ reign they cast lots before Haman every day from month to month until the twelfth month that is the month Adar.

Mordecai informs Esther of plot against the king.
Now when the virgins were gathered together the second time, Mordecai continued to sit before the king’s gate. And Esther had not revealed her kindred as Mordecai had told her not to. And at that time, while Mordecai continued to sit before the King’s gate, that two of the king’s chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those who kept the door, were very upset with the king, and conspired to lay hands on the king. But the plan was overheard by Mordecai who told it to Esther the Queen; and she informed the king, telling him that Mordecai was the source of her information. And when the report was investigated, it was found out that the information was correct, and Bigthan and Teresh were both hanged on a tree; and the incident was written in the book of the chronicles of the king.

Esther Chosen as Queen
So then after twelve month, the time it took for the maidens to be purified, six months of which were for the purification in oils of myrrh, and the further six months with sweet odours and other thing used in the purification of women, all the maids then appeared unto the king. And whatsoever she desired was given her to go out of the house of the women unto the king’s house. In the evening she went and on the morrow she returned to the second house of the women under the custody of Shaashgaz the king’s chamberlain who kept the concubines. And she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and that she were called by name. Now when the turn of Esther the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai who had taken her for her daughter, was come to go before the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s chamberlain had given her. And Esther obtained favor in the sight of the king of all them that looked upon her. So Ether was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house on the tenth month which is the month Tebeth in the seventeenth year of his reign. The king loved Esther more than all the other women and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the others; and he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her Queen instead of Vashti. Then the ling made a great feast unto all his princes and to all his servants even a feast for Esther, and he gave gifts to all the provinces according to his pleasure.

Mordecai
Now there was at the
palace at Shushan a certain man, a Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of
Jair, the son Shimie, the son of Kish a Benjamite. Mordecai had been carried
away from Jerusalem during the time of the captivity when Jeconiah king of
Judah who was carried away by Nebuchadnezzar into Babylonian captivity. And
Mordecai reared up Hadassah who was called Esther, his uncle’s daughter, for
Esther had neither father nor mother. Esther was a very beautiful girl and
Mordecai, after her father and mother were dead, brought her up as his own
daughter. So it came to pass that when the king’s commandment and his decree
had gone forth and many maidens had been gathered together at the palace at Shushan
and placed in the custody of Hegai, the King’s chambermaid; and Esther was also
brought forth unto the palace into her custody, with the other women. And Hegai
was pleased with the sight of Esther, and he gave her the things she needed for
purification and for her personal needs, and that of the seven maidens that
were her portion to attend her as per the kings orders. And Hegai gave to
Esther the best quarters and the best provisions because he liked her. In the
meantime, Esther had not revealed that she was of Jewish ancestry because
Mordecai had cautioned her not to. And day by day meanwhile, Mordecai walked before
the king’s court just to keep an eye out in case any evil should befall Esther.

Vashti Deposed
The King’s advisers in proposing the decree deposing Queen Vashti, explained to him that the proposed decree would have the effect when it was made public, of ensuring that all the wives throughout the kingdom would honour and respect their husbands. And the recommendation pleased the king, and the princes, and the king made the decree as recommended to him. And he sent letters to all the kings of the provinces within his domain, and to every people in their language, stating that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should be published in the language of all the peoples. And after the king’s wrath had abated, he began to think of Vashti, what she had done, and the decree made against her. And the king’s servants perceiving where the king’s thoughts were leading him, suggested that there be a search for fair young virgins for the king throughout his domain, that all fair young virgins be brought together in the king’s palace at Shushan and given unto the custody of Hege, the king’s chamberlain, and keeper of the women, and let them be given the things they need for purification and beautification; so that from among them may be chosen, one that pleased the king. And the king was in agreement with the proposal.
