Clash
at Gibeon between followers of Ishbosheth and followers of David
And
it came to pass that Abner the son of Ner, together with Ishbosheth Saul’s son,
went to Gibeon, while Joab, the son of Zeruiah and some of David’s men went out
and met together by the pool Gibeon. And the two groups of men sat on opposite
sides of the pool. And Abner challenged Joab to pitch his young men against
his. So twelve of the men of Benjamin
who followed Ishbosheth went out against twelve of the men who followed David.
And each one caught his opposite number by the head and trust his sword in his
side. And they all fell down dead together, so that the place was called thereafter,
Helkathhazruim which is in Gibeon. And
there was a sore battle that day; and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten
by the men of David. Among those who fought that day were the three sons of
Zeruiah, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel who was a swift runner. And Asahel chased
after Abner, turning neither to the right nor the left. At one point, Abner
turned and saw Asahel following him and told him to stop; but Asahel continued
to follow him whereupon Abner thrust him through with his spear and he died on
the spot.
