Saul Admits his guilt

Then Saul lifted up his voice and said, “I have sinned. Return my son David; for I will no more do you harm, since you held my life so precious that you spared my life.  I have played the fool, and have sinned exceedingly.” And David answered and said, “Behold I hold the king’s spear. Let one of the young men come over and get it.” And then he announced. “The Lord renders to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; For the Lord delivered you into my hand today; but I would not stretch forth my hand against the Lord’s anointed. And moreover, as your life was much set by this day in my eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the Lord; and let Him deliver me out of my tribulation.” Then Saul said to David, “Blessed be thou, my son David; thou shall both do great things and also shall prevail.”  So David went on his way and Saul returns to his place. Notwithstanding Saul’s words to David, they did not assure him.  In fact David thought to himself that unless he did something, Saul would one day kill him. So he decided to leave the land of Israel and escape and dwell in the land of the philistines with his six hundred men.  So David departed and went to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath. And David dwelt with Achish at Gath he and his men each man taking his family with him; and David also took his two wives Ahinoam and Abigail to dwell with him.

David Tries again to plead with Saul
Having removed Saul’s spear and water bottle in the night while he was in a deep sleep induced by the Lord, David stood on a hillside the next morning at a safe distance of course, and shouted out to the people around Saul, and addressing Abner his commander by name and said to him. “Abner, can you hear me Abner?”  And Abner answered back and asked who was it that was shouting out to the king? and David asked him, “Are you a brave man?  And are there any others like you in all Israel? How therefore have you not protected your Lord the king?  This thing that you have done is not good. As the Lord is my witness, you are worthy of death because you have not protected the king the Lord’s anointed. And to prove it where is the king’s spear and the cruse of water that was by his pillow?”  Saul recognized David’s voice and asked.  “Is this the voice of my son David?”  And David said, “It is my voice my Lord O king.”  And David asked Saul, “Why, therefore d you continue to pursue me? What have I done, or what evil is in my hand? Therefore O king here these my words. If the Lord has stirred you up against me let him accept an offering; but if it is the children of men, cursed be they before the Lord for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the presence of the Lord saying go serve other gods.” “Therefore,” David continued to address Saul, “Let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the Lord; for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains.

David spared Saul a second Time.

In spite of the vow between Saul and David, Saul continued his bitter enmity against David and still intended to kill him should the opportunity arose. And so when the Ziphites went and told Saul that David was hiding in the hills of Hachilah, Saul rose and went in pursuit of David in the wilderness of Ziph, taking with him three thousand hand-picked men to find David. And while Saul pitched his tent in Jeshimon, David remained in the wilderness and he saw Saul’s soldiers searching for him, and to make sure, David sent out spies which reported back to him that Saul was indeed with his men   And David went and camped near the very place where Saul had pitched his tent and from there he could see the spot where Saul was lying. And there were with him Abner the captain of his host, and the soldiers all around him. And David enquired of his men who would go down into Saul’s camp with him; and Abishai volunteered to go. And so David and Abishai went among the people in the camp by night, and found the King lying in his tent, his spear stuck in the ground by his pillow; and Abner and the soldiers lying near all around him. Then Abishai told David that the Lord had again delivered Saul unto his hand and volunteered to smite Saud, saying he would only need to strike him once with his very spear. But David told Abishai, “Destroy him not; for who can stretch forth his hand against the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless?”  And then David added, “As the Lord liveth, the Lord shall strike him. His day shall come to die, or he will fall in battle and perish. The Lord forbid that I should stretch forth my hand against the Lord’s anointed; but take his spear and his water and let us go” So they took the spear and the water and escaped. And no one saw Saul or Abishai nor, heard anything, because the Lord had caused Saul and all his men to fall into a deed sleep. Indeed how Great is the Lord!

David Continues to Plead with Saul

David’s rationale was that as much as Saul wanted to take his life, he was not at liberty to kill Saul because Saul was the Lord’s anointed. So he continued to reason with Saul, appealing to his paternal relationship with him. “Moreover my father he addressed Saul, see this skirt of your robe in my hand, for just as I cut off the skirt of your robe and kill you not, that alone should tell you that there is no evil in me, and I bare you no malice; and I have not sinned against you.  Yet you hunt me, and seek my life to kill me. The Lord will judge between you and me; the Lord will avenge you for me; but my hand will not be laid against you. You know the ancient proverb which says, ‘wickedness proceeds from the wicked;’ but my hand will not be raised against you. Who is the King of Israel chasing, against whom has he come out?  Am I a dog or a fly that you want to kill me?  The Lord, therefore, be judge, and judge between you and me, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of your hand.”  And it came to pass that when David stopped speaking as he did to Saul, he asked; “is this your voice my son David?” And Saul lifted up his voice and wept. Saul now at least for the moment humbles himself before David, and he said to David, “You are more righteous than I am, for you have rewarded me good, whereas I rewarded you with evil. And you have shown this day how you have dealt well with me, for as much as when the Lord delivered me into your hands you did not kill me. For if a man finds his enemy will he let him go?  Therefore now I know that the Lord is going to reward you with the kingship and the Kingdom of Israel shall surely be in your hand. Swear now, therefore, unto me that you will not cut off my seed after me, and will not destroy my name out of your father’s house.”  And David made Saul the promise as he asked.

David Spares Saul’s Life
After that Saul returned from chasing the Philistines; and he learnt that David was at Engedi in the wilderness.  And he took three thousand chosen men of war and went out after David. Eventually he came to the very cave in which David and his men were hiding; but being weary he sat down near the mouth of the cave and fell asleep. Seeing Saul asleep, David’s men told him to seize the opportunity to kill him as the Lord had delivered his enemy into his hand, that he may deal with him as he saw fit. Then David went and cut off a piece from the robe Saul was wearing; but other than that, he did not hurt the King. Nevertheless, after that, David felt guilt within his heart for cutting the King’s robe, and he said unto his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the Lord’s anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord’s anointed.”  So David calmed his servants with those words, and caused them not to rise against Saul.  Afterwards Saul woke up and left the cave, and went his way; and David followed him out of the cave and called to Saul and shouted to him, and bowing before him, addressed him and said. “My Lord the king, why do you listen to men’s words saying that I seek your hurt? Behold this day your eyes have seen that the Lord had delivered you into my hands in the cave; and some urged me to kill you; but my eyes spared you and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my Lord for he is the Lord’s anointed.” (to be continued).

Trump the Best thing for the Democrats

Why Trump is good for the Democratic Party
Somehow, every time I see and hear Donald Trump, I am reminded of Barry Goldwater, and how much cold water he poured on the Republican Party in 1964, and truly doused by that cold inundation, the Republican Party has not recovered up to this day, as far as the Black Vote is concerned.
Let me go back a bit to the 1860’s, when Abraham Lincoln, good old Abe, ran on the platform of freeing the slaves and giving them the right to vote in elections. For those who do not know, women too were disenfranchised at that time. Lincoln, a Republican, was elected in 1860 and keeping his promise, he freed the slaves and enfranchised them, in the face of bitter opposition, mainly from the South the stronghold of the Democrats, which also led to civil war, Abolitionists Republicans against Anti-Abolitionists Democrats, though mainly characterized North against South. And let us look at the sacrifice; 620,000 died in that Civil War almost as many as those who died in all other wars.
Naturally, the grateful freedmen, they were no longer slaves, voted for the next 70 years, until 1933, Republican. By 1933 of course some Blacks did support the Democratic Party; but support for the Republicans was something like two thirds one third.
Then came the depression and by 1933 10,000.000 people were unemployed and in dire need.  Naturally, Blacks were included in that number. In 1933 in response to the crisis in the country Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) the new Democratic President introduced his New Deal policies which included help for the needy, which naturally included a large number of Blacks who subsequently turned in greater numbers to the Democratic Party. But significantly it was not all blacks who flocked to the Democrats because of Public Assistance as some would have us believe. For whereas the following among black before was two thirds Republican one third Democrat, only about one third more joined the Democrats, which meant the voting pattern was directly reversed. That remained the numerical pattern up to the 1960’s, perhaps by which time the division was more like 60% in favor of the Democrats, 40% Republicans.
Then something happened, Barry Goldwater.  In the 1964 Republican Convention Barry Goldwater, Bull Dog Goldwater as he is better known, with overwhelming Southern support, received the Party’s nomination notwithstanding his vitriolic outbursts against Blacks and other minorities. He did not become President thank God, but that was it as far as the Black vote is concerned. Blacks in particular thereafter, turned almost 100% to the Democrats. And there it basically remained. In 2008 President Obama received 90% of the Black vote and since then the Republicans have been struggling to woo Black voters.
In 2000 in Florida for example, where the white vote is split almost down the middle, it was the Black vote, although comprising only 12% of the electorate that caused the political upheaval between George W Bush and Al Gore. Many argue that 12000 black votes were improperly rejected mostly through disenfranchisement which if they were allowed to vote, would have given Al Gore victory in contradistinction to the meager 567 votes which gave Mr. Bush the victory.

And here we go again. Another Goldwater for all intent and purposes grabbing the Republican nomination.  Is this history repeating itself? The stink coming out of Trumps mouth and the drooling over his billions as one of his supporters admits, would seem to put the question beyond doubt. And for the future? Republicans can kiss the Black vote goodbye.  For sure a trump nomination is the best thing that could have happened to the Democratic Party.
