BRAGADAYJAH 1093

BRAGADAYJAH 1093
Young Jehoash Reigned for Forty Years.

After the death of Athaliah, Jehoiada the priest made a tripartite covenant, namely, between the king and the Lord, the people and the Lord, and between the Lord and the king and the people to the effect that the Lord would be their God and they would be God’s people. And the people as one went into the house of Baal and demolished it, and destroyed all the high places and articles of worship to Baal, and slew the priest of Baal and appointed officers of the Lord in the house of the Lord. And Jehoiada gathered together all the captains of hundreds and all their leaders, and all the people of the land; and they took the young king and carried him from the house of the Lord to the king’s palace and set him up on the throne to reign there. And Jehoash was seven years old when he began to reign. He reigned forty years and did what was right in the sight of the Lord under the guidance of Jehoiada the priest. But while all the remnants of the house of Baal were destroyed, yet there were certain high places where the people continued to make sacrifices and burnt offerings to other Gods.

BRAGADAYJAH 1092
The son in hiding revealed and crowned king

And the captains did according as Jehoiada the priest had ordered them to do. And he gave King David’s spears and shields that were in the temple of the Lord to the captain s. And the guards stood every man with his weapon in his hand surrounding the king from every corner of the temple. And Jehoiada the priest brought out the king’s son and put the crown upon his head and gave him the testimony, and anointed him; and the people clapped their hands and said “God save the king.” And when Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people she came to the people in the temple of the Lord; and when she looked she saw the king standing be a pillar as was the custom; and she heard the voice of the trumpet and the adulation of the people as they proclaimed the new king; and she shouted, “Treason! Treason!.”. But the priest when she was seized, commanded that she may not be killed in the house of the Lord.  So they dragged her outside and killed her.

BRAGADAYJAH 1091

BRAGADAYJAH 1091
Athaliah Jehoahaz’s Mother Took the Throne.

And so it came to pass that even in the days of Jehu king of Israel, the Lord began to diminish the borders of Israel; and Hazael smote them all along their border along the coasts. And in that time Jehu died having reigned over Israel twenty eight years; and was buried in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son reigned in his stead; but he died soon after; and when Athaliah Jehoahaz’s mother saw that he was dead, she rose up and destroyed all the royal seed. But Jehosheba the daughter of Joram sister of Ahaziah took Joash, the son of Ahaziah, and hid him away in the bedchamber together with his nurse; so that he was not slain. And he remained hidden for six years, while in the meantime Athaliah reigned over Israel. And in the seventh year, Jehoiada the priest gathered together all the rulers over hundreds together with the captains and the guards into the house of the Lord and made a covenant with them and showed them the king’s son. And he commanded them that a third of them shall enter in on the Sabbath day, and keep watch over the king’s house; and a third shall watch over the gate of Sur, and the other third at the gate behind the guard, so that the king’s house be completely surrounded and defended.

BRAGADAYJAH 1090

BRAGADAYJAH 1090
Jehu cleansed Israel of Baal
So the worshippers of Baal gathered and went in to offer sacrifices and burn offerings. And Jehu appointed eighty men outside and instructed them that if any of the people inside should escape, he would hold each of them accountable and pay with their own lives. And when the worshippers of Baal had made an end of sacrifice and burnt offering, Jehu commanded them to go inside and slay every one of them; and they were slain, and the bodies thrust out; and they went to the house of Baal and took out the images and burnt them, and thus eradicated Baal out of Israel. However, Jehu did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin, for he kept the golden calves that were in Bethel and Dan. And the Lord told Jehu that because he had done well in expelling Baal his children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel; but Jehu took no heed of the word of the Lord and continued in the sins of Jeroboam.

BRAGADAYJAH 1089

BRAGADAYJAH 1089
Jehu entrapped the worshipers of Baal
So then Jehu called all the people together and addressed them and told them that Ahab had served Baal a little but that he intended to serve him much. So he ordered them to gather together all the prophets and all the priests, and all he worshipers of Baal so he could make an appropriate sacrifice to Baal. He cautioned that he would regard it as a personal affront if any should fail to attend. But of course Jehu’s intention was to gather all the worshipers of Baal into one place. And when they were gathered together Jehu ordered that a solemn assembly be proclaimed and they did so. In the meantime, Jehu ensured that every worshiper of Baal throughout all Israel was assembled there, so that none were absent. And Jehu ordered the keeper of the vestry to bring out vestments for all the worshipers of Baal and he did so. And Jehu went into the house of Baal accompanied by Jehonadab. And he told he assembled worshipers to search carefully among them to ensure that there were not any worshippers of the Lord present among them.

BRAGADAYJAH 1088

BRAGADAYJAH 1088
Jehu slew all of Ahab’s Seventy Sons.

Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters and sent to Samaria to the rulers, the elders and those who cared for Ahab’s children, instructing them that since they have the children with them, and horses and chariots also, and living in a fenced city protected by armour, that they should select the best and most likely one of the sons and set him upon his father's throne.  But when they received the letters they were all very much afraid, knowing he was the one who had slaughtered the two kings. So they wrote back to Jehu telling him that they were his servants, and would do whatever he asked them to do; but that they would not make anyone king, and that he should do whatever seemed best in his sight. So the king wrote back to them and told them that since they were willing to obey him, they should take the heads of the king’s sons, all seventy of them, to him by the next day. And so when the letter came to them they took off the heads of the king’s seventy sons and put them in baskets and sent them to Jezreel. And when they told the king that the heads of the seventy sons of Ahab had arrived, he ordered them to be left until morning; and in the morning he addressed the people and told them that he had conspired against his master and slew him, but asked “who slew all of these? So now know’ that nothing spoken by the word of the Lord concerning the house of Ahab; for the Lord has done that which He spoke by His servant Elisha.” So Jehu slew all that remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel; and all his great men, and his kinfolks and his priests; and left not one remaining.

Jehu Executes Ahaziah

When Ahaziah saw what befell Jehoram, he too turned and fled. And Jehu followed after him and commanded his men to slay Ahaziah also while in his chariot. And Ahaziah was slain and he continued on wounded to Megiddo and he died there. And his servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem and buried him there in the sepulcher of his father in the city of David. And when Jehu had come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it and she painted her face and tied her head, and looked out of a window, and she saw Jehu coming and shouted. “Had Zimri peace who slew his master!” And Jehu lifted up his face to the window and said. “Who is on my side?” “Who?” And two or three eunuchs appeared at the window behind Jezebel. And Jehu said, “Throw her out of the window.” And they threw her down and some of her blood spilled unto the wall and unto the horses; and Jehu rode over her and she was trampled under feet. And when he went in, he ate and drank and said. “This is the word of the Lord which he spoke by the mouth of his servant Elisha saying; “by the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel; and her carcase shall lie in the field until her body could no longer be identified.”

BRAGADAYJAH 1087
Jehu Smote Jehoram

So when the horseman sent out by Joram to Jehu, he asked him the question in the name of the king, “Do you come in peace?” And Jehu asked him what he had to do with peace, and told him to get behind him. So it was reported to the king that the horseman sent out did not return. So a second horseman was sent out who asked the same question, and received the same answer from Jehu, “turn thee behind me.” Then the watchman reported that the second rider sent out did not return either, and also as the riders came nearer riding furiously, the rider looked like Jehu. Then Joram ordered his servants to make ready his chariot and it was made ready. And so Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah each went out in his chariot; and they both went out against Jehu and met him in the portion pertaining to Naboth the Jezreelite.  And when Joram saw Jehu he asked him, “Is it peace Jehu?” And he replied. “What peace so long as the whoredom of thy mother Jezebel and his witchcraft are so many?”  And Joram turned around and fled and shouted to Ahaziah that there was treachery. And Jehu drew a bow and smote Jehoram through the heart and he sank down in his chariot. Then Jehu gave command for Jehoram’s body to be cast into the field of Naboth the Jezreelite.

BRAGADAYJAH 1086
Jehu anointed King in Ramoth-gilead

After the young man had fled, Jehu came out of the house and he was asked by the men gathered around if all was well, and what the mad looking young man wanted; to which he replied and said that they knew the man and his communications. And they asked him if what the young man told him was true of false; and he told them what the young man had said to him including the revelation that he was anointed king over Israel. Then the men who were with him stripped off their garments and laid hem on the stairway and blew the trumpets proclaiming Jehu as king. So Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi conspired against Joram, whose territory extended into Ramoth-gilead because of Hazael king of Syria. By this time King Joram was healed of his wounds and was in Jezreel; so Jehu told his men to make sure that none should escape out of Ramoth-gilead to carry news to Jezreel to inform Joram that Jehu had been anointed king. So Jehu rode in a chariot and went to Jezreel where Joram was; and there to see Joram also was Ahaziah king of Judah. And as Jehu was approaching, the watchman saw him and reported it to Joram; and Joram instructed that a horseman should go out to meet him and ask him whether he came in peace.

BRAGADAYJAH 1085

According to Elisha's instructions to the young son of the prophets, he went to Ramoth- Gilead and when he arrived there, he found gathered there the captains sitting around in a gathering on the outside. And he told them that he was there on an errand concerning one of them. And they asked him with whom and he pointed out Jehu and told him it was with him. So the two men went into the house and the young man poured the oil on Jehu's head and said to him, "The Lord has anointed you king over the people of the Lord, even over Israel. And thou shall smite the house of Ahab, even your master that the blood of God's servants the prophet, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord which also were shed at the hands of Jezebel. For thus saith the Lord, the whole house of Ahab shall perish; and I will cut off from Ahab all his male descendants and all those who are shut up and left in Israel. And I will make the house of Israel like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah. And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the portion of Jezreel that there be none left to bury her." And having spoken thus he opened the door and fled as he was told he should do by Elisha the man of God.

BRAGADAYJAH 1084
Joram Stricken Anointed king
Now in the twelfth year during the reign of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign. Ahaziah was 22 years old when he began to reign and he reigned on year in Jerusalem.  And his mother's name was Athaliah the daughter of Omri king of Israel. And he was led in the way of the house of Ahab for he was the son-in-law of the house of Ahab. And he went with Joram the son of Ahab to war against Hazael king of Syria at Ramoth-Gilead; and the Syrians wounded Joram and he went back to Jezreel to be healed of his wounds  which he sustained in the war. And Ahazih the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see him because he was sick. And the prophet Elisha called one of the sons of the prophets and gave him a box of oil and instructed him to take to Ramoth-Gilead and once there go in to and pour the oil on the head of the sick man Joram and say to him, "Thus saith the Lord I have anointed you king over Israel." But he was told also that as soon as he was finished speaking, that he should open the door and flee.

BRAGADAYJAH 1083
Death of Joram, Ahaziah Reigns
In the fifth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, Jehoshaphat being then king of Judah Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat began to reign. Jehoram was thirty two years old when he began to reign and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. And he did according to the kings of Israel as did the house of Ahab; for his wife was the daughter of Ahab; and he did evil in the sight of the Lord. Yet the Lord would not destroy Judah for David His servant’s sake, as he had promised him, to give always to him and his children a light. And in the days of Jehoram, Edom revolted against Judah and made a king over themselves. And so Joram went over to Zair and all his chariots with him; and he rose by night and smote the Edomites round about and the captains and the chariots and the people fled to their tents. Yet Edom revolted from under the rule of Judah and stayed separated ever after. And after that Joram died and was buried in the city of David and his son Ahaziah If there is an apparent inconsistency in this account, it can be clarified easily if we understand that the names Jehoram and Joram are used interchangeably. So for instance [ 2 Ki. 8:21 ] “So Joram went over to Zair,”] So also verse 23, Joram died and was buried in Jerusalem and succeeded by Azariah.  These references are references to Jehoram.

BRAGADAYJAH 1082
Benhadad king of Syria Assassinated.

Some time later, Benhadad the king of Syria was ill and during that time Elisha visited Damascus. And it was told the king that Elisha the man of God as in Damascus. And the king when he heard that the man of God was in Damascus told his servant Hazael to go see Elisha taking a present for him, and ask him whether he the king would recover of his disease. So Hazael took a goodly gift even forty camels burdened with every good thing of Damascus, and approached Elisha and told him that his master the king of Syria had sent him to enquire of him whether he should survive of his illness or not. And Elisha said to the king’s servant that even though he may recover, the Lord had shown him that he would surely die. And the countenance of the king’s servant changed on hearing Elisha’s answer; and seeing his countenance Elisha wept. And Hazael asked Elisha why he was weeping and Elisha told him “Because I know the evil that thou wilt do to the children of Israel; their strongholds wilt thou set on fire; and their young men will thou slay with the sword, and will dash their children and rip up their women with child.” And Hazael asked, “Am I a dog that I should do this wicked thing?”  And Elisha said, the Lord has shown me that thou wilt be king of Syria. So Hazael departed and went back to his master the king of Syria. And the king asked him, “What is the answer from the man of God?” And he answered and said, “He told me that you will surely recover.” But the very next morning Hazael took a cloth and soaked it in water, and used it to suffocate the king that he died; and Hazael reigned in his stead.

Elisha Predicts Seven Years of Famine
After that Elisha spoke to the woman whose son he had restored and told her to take her household with her and leave and go wherever she could find a place to live, because the Lord has called upon the land seven years of famine. So the woman listened to Elisha’s advice and went and dwelled seven years in the land of the Philistines. And after the end of the seven years, the woman went back home and petitioned the king for her house and her lands. And the king spoke with Gehazi the servant of the man of God and asked him to tell him of all the great things that Elisha the man of God had done. And it happened that while Gehazi was telling the king how the man of God had restored life unto a dead boy, the woman came crying to the king for her house and her land; and Gehazi told the king that this was the same woman whose son had been restored. And the king asked the woman if it was indeed true that Elisha had restored his son; and the woman confirmed that it was so. And so the king assigned unto her a certain officer with instructions to restore unto the woman her house and lands and all the fruit and all the increase taken from her land for the full period of seven years.

BRAGADAYJAH 1080
The King’s lord died at the gate
And so accordingly, the king sent out two chariot horses after the host of the Syrians with instructions to go and see. And as they went all the way towards the Jordan they found strewn along the way garments and vessels which the Syrians had discarded as they fled in haste. And the messengers returned and informed the king. On hearing the news, the people went out and spoiled the tents of the Syrians to the extent that flour and barley were plentiful, so that a measure of fine flour was sold for a shekel and two measures of barley for a shekel, as Elisha the man of God had foretold. And the king appointed the lord on whose hand he learned to have the charge of the gate; and while there he was trampled to death by the people just as Elisha had said, he would not eat of the spoils; for the people clamored at the gate and he died that day. For he was that same lord on whom the king leant who had answered Elisha and asked, “Now behold if the Lord should make windows in heaven might such a thing be?” And Elisha had replied and said, “Behold thou shall see it with your eyes but shall not eat thereof.” And so it fell to him that he died at the gate having been trampled by the people.

BRAGADAYJAH 1079

BRAGADAYJAH 1079
God caused the Syrians to flee
No one was found in the Syrian camp because the Lord had made them to hear the noise of chariots and of horses like the sound of a great host, and they thought to themselves that the king of Israel had hired a great host, the Hittites and the Egyptians to fight against them. So they arose and fled in the twilight and left their tents and their horses and all their very camp as it was set up and fled for their lives. So when the lepers had gone to the uttermost parts of the camp they entered a tent and ate and drank and took from there, silver and gold and clothing and sent and hid it. And they returned a second time and took from another tent more booty and went and hid it likewise. Then they reasoned among themselves and decided that it would not be wise to remain in the camp until morning; but rather that they should get word to the king’s household. So they went and called to the porter of the city and told him that they went to the camp of the Syrians and found no man there, except horses and asses tied, and the tents as they were. And the porters told the king what was told to them. But when the king heard the news, he did not believe it. He thought that the Syrians knowing they were hungry, had left their camp and hid themselves, and were lying in wait for them to enter when they would suddenly pounce on them. But 0ne of the king’s servants advise him it would do no harm if a small contingent were to be sent in to see what was going on and the king agreed.

BRAGADAYJAH 1078

BRAGADAYJAH 1078
Elisha Promised Food in Abundance
And so it was that while the king was raging against Elisha, he was in his house sitting with the elders. And the king sent his messenger to fetch Elisha; but before the messenger came to him, Elisha told the elders that this king the son of a murderer, had vowed to take off his head and even then his messenger was on his way to his house. So he told the elders that when the messenger got to the door, they should bar it; for close behind him would be the sound of his master’s feet. And while Elisha was still speaking to the elders, the messenger came to the door and the sound of the footsteps of the king and his men could be heard.  And Elisha went out and proclaimed, in the name of the Lord that by morning, about that same time, a measure of fine flour would be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria. Then a man on whose arm the king leaned asked the man of God, how could God even if he made windows in heaven, make this thing come to pass.  And Elisha told him to wait and see it in the morning with his eyes, even though he, the king’s man, would not eat thereof. In the meantime, there were four lepers outside the gate; and they reasoned among themselves and asked one another why they were sitting there dying of starvation. They reasoned that if they continued sitting there death would certainly come to them. And if they went into the city they would be killed either way they would be dead.  So they decided to throw caution to the wind and enter the city, and go among the Syrians. What they possibly had to lose they ventured; they can either save us or kill us. So at twilight they rose up and went into the Syrian camp and searched from one end of it to the other; but not a man was found there.

BRAGADAYJAH 1077

BRAGADAYJAH 1077
Famine in Samaria
Then it came to pass that after Elisha’s magnanimity in advising the king to let the Syrians go, after all the host of the Syrians would not have spared him had they caught him, Benhadad king of Syria gathered all his host and went up and besieged Samaria at a time when there was a great famine in Samaria. And the Syrians continued to besiege it until there was nothing to eat; the famine was so bad that an ass’s head was sold for forty pieces of silver, and a fourth part of a cab of dove’s dung, for five pieces of silver. And as the king was passing by the wall there cried unto him a woman saying, “Help my Lord O king!” And the king said. ”If the Lord does not help you, how can I?” And how can I help you, out of the barn floor or out of the winepress?  The king’s rhetorical question was designed to show that there was neither wheat in the barns nor wine in the winepress, hence he asked “How can I help you?” Then the king asked her what ailed her and she said “This woman agreed with me that we should eat my son the first day, and that after that we would eat hers. So we boiled my son and did eat him, and on the next day when I called upon her to produce her son that we should eat him, she hid her son. And when the king heard the report of the woman he tore his clothes and came closer to the wall and as he did so the people beheld that he had sackcloth upon his flesh. Then in response to the woman’s complaint, the king ignoring the plea turned his vengeance against Elisha swearing to have his head. But we may observe, he had no real sympathy for the woman’s plight. He ignored it or did not offer her any resolution to her complaint. We say this because we note that when he came on the scene he was already wearing sackcloth. We conclude then he used the complaint to vent his spleen against Elisha, no doubt blaming him for the famine in the land, and also to avert attention away from him and on Elisha. Elisha’s master Elijah was held by the king’s mother and father, Jezebel and Ahab for the previous famine in the land. So now the king felt in his heart Elisha was responsible either for causing it, or for not caring enough about the plight of the people to intervene and end it. So in the sight and hearing of the people he cried death to Elisha!

BRAGADAYJAH 1076
Elisha spared the host of Syria.
Fair not said Elisha, there are more for us than against us. Then Elisha prayed and said, “O Lord open his eyes that he may see;” and the Lord opened the eyes of the young man and he saw and behold the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha And when they came down to him Elisha prayed unto the Lord and said, “Smite the people I pray thee with blindness.” And the Lord smote them with blindness according to the prayer of Elisha. And Elisha said to them, this is not the way, neither is this the city. “Follow me and I will bring you to the man whom you seek.”  But he led them to Samaria; and it came to pass that when they were come into Samaria, that Elisha said, “Lord open the eyes of these men that they may see.” And the Lord opened their eyes and they saw and they were in the middle of Samaria. And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when he saw them. “My father, my father, shall I smite them?” And Elisha answered and said, “Thou shall not smite them.” “Will you smite those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with you bow? Set bread and water before them that they may eat and drink and go to their master.” And he prepared great provision for them and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away; and they went to their master the king of Syria and they came no more into the land of Israel.

BRAGADAYJAH 1075

BRAGADAYJAH 1075
Elisha surrounded by an army yet not afraid.
At that time the king of Syria warred against Israel and discussed with his servants where he would pitch his camp. And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel warning him to beware and do not pass the place where the king of Syria was encamped. As a result the king of Israel on at least two occasions was able to avoid the traps set for him by the king of Syria, after been forewarned by the man of God. Accordingly the heart of the king of Syria was very troubled; and so he called his servants and asked them who of them were on the side of the king of Israel, and were revealing to him his location. And one of his servants answered the king and assured him that there was no traitor among them; but that it was the man of God Elisha, who was foretelling to the king of Israel his movements, even the very words he whispered in his bedchamber. And the king of Syria told his servants to go spy out the place where Elisha was and inform him accordingly. And it was told the king that Elisha was in Dothan. So the king of Syria sent horses and chariots and a great host and surrounded the city in the night.  And in the morning when Elisha’s servant arose he saw that the city was surrounded by a great host; so he reported what he saw to Elisha and asked him what should they do? And Elisha said, “Fear not; for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.

The Axe that swam
It would appear then, that the snow white skin is associated with greed and leprosy. Be that as it may, it happened after that, Gehazi was stricken with leprosy and the whitening of his skin, the sons of the prophets told Elisha the place where they were dwelling with him was too strict for them. They requested him to allow them to go away over Jordan every man taking a beam with him and that once over they would dwell there.  And Elisha told them to go. And then one of them asked him to be pleased to go with them and Elisha told them he would. And so he accompanied them to the Jordan and when they reached the Jordan they cut down wood. And as one was felling a tree, his axe head fell into the water. And he cried and said, “Alas master, the axe was not mine, it was borrowed. And Elisha asked him where it had fallen, and the man showed him the spot. And Elisha cut down a stick and cast it into the water and the iron swam to the top of the water. Then Elisha then told the man to put out his hand and take hold of the axe head and the man did so, and recovered the axe head.

BRAGADAYJAH 1073
The Everlasting Curse of Whiteness
so then Gehazi ran after Naaman, and when Naaman saw him coming, he alighted his chariots and asked him if anything was wrong. And Gehazi said all was well. But said he, “My master has sent me to ask you if you would give a talent of silver and two changes of clothes for the sons of the prophets. And Naaman told him he would be happy to give double that amount. So he took, two talents of silver and two changes of clothes in two bags and laid them upon two of his servants and sent them with Gehazi. And he led them to a certain house where he took the gifts from the two servants, and sent them back to Naaman after which he hid the booty there.  Then he went and stood before Elisha. And Elisha asked him where he went and he replied and said he had not gone anywhere. And Elisha asked him if he did not know his heart went with him. That he was there with him when Naaman came down off his chariot to meet him. And Elisha asked him. “Is this the time to receive money, and garments, and oliveyards and vineyards and sheep and oxen and manservants and maidservants? The leprosy, therefore, of Naaman shall come upon thee and unto thy children and thy seed forever.”  And Gehazi went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.

Elisha Refused to take a gift from Naaman
So when Naaman was made clean, he returned to the man of God, he and his company and standing before the man of God, he proclaimed that he was then convinced that there was no God in all the earth like the God of Israel.  So he urged Elisha to take a blessing from him. But Elisha refused saying, “As the Lord liveth before whom I stand, I will not receive a present from you.” And Naaman asked would you not give me two mules burden of earth? For I will henceforth offer no sacrifice to any god other than the Lord. I pray that in this thing the Lord may pardon me; that when my master go into the house of Rimmon to worship in the house of Rimmon, and he leans on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, the Lord will pardon me in so doing. And Elisha told Naaman to go in peace.  And after he departed, Gehazi Elisha’s servant told himself that it was not right for his master Elisha to send Naaman away with all the gifts he had brought to his master which his master had refused. So he decided to run after him and take some of the gifts for himself.

BRAGADAYJAH 1071

BRAGADAYJAH 1071
Naaman cleansed of his leprosy.
And so it happened that when Elisha heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, and said, “Am I God to kill and to make alive,” and his reaction and his words at the king of Syria’s request to him whereby he was upset, he sent to the king saying, “Why has thou rent thy clothes?” Let him come now to me and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.  So Naaman went to Elisha with his chariots and horses and stood at the door of Elisha’s house. And Elisha sent a messenger unto him telling him to go wash in the Jordan seven times and his flesh would come again to him and he would be clean. But Naaman was upset and went away and said, “Behold I thought he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God and strike his hand over me and cleanse me of the leprosy. Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers in Damascus better than all the waters of Israel? May I not wash in them and be clean?” So he turned and sent away in a rage. But Naaman’s servant asked him if he would he not have done what the man of God said to him if he had asked him to do some great thing, so, he reasoned with his master, how much more simple it was if he said go wash seven times?  So Naaman went and dipped himself into the Jordan seven times and his flesh returned to him as if he were a little child. And he was cleansed of his leprosy.

BRAGADAYJAH 1070

BRAGADAYJAH 1070
Naaman’s Leprosy
Now Naaman captain of the host of the king of Syria was a great man of his master and most honourable because it was because of him why his king received deliverance; and although he was a mighty man, he was also a leper. And the Syrians had gone up by companies against Israel and had captured and took away a little girl who was made to wait upon Naaman and his wife. And eventually she told her mistress that she was sure that there was a prophet of God who was at Samaria, and who could cure Naaman of his leprosy. And someone went in and told the king what the little maid out of Israel had said. And the king of Syria decided to send a letter unto the king of Israel. And the messenger departed and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand pieces of gold and ten changes of clothes. And he brought the letter to the king of Israel introducing Naaman and asking that he be cleansed from his leprosy. And after the king of Israel read the letter he was resentful and angry and asked if he was God, and called attention to the fact that the king of Syria was picking a fight with him by sending him a leper and asking him to cleanse him of his leprosy.

Elisha’s Miracles of the Pottage and Bread
And so Elisha the man of God was able to call upon his God and so caused the life to be restored unto the dead child. And so he told his servant Gehazi to call the child’s mother; and when he had come, he told her to take up her son; and she went in and bowed herself to the ground before Elisha and took up her child and went out. And after that Elisha returned to Gilgal and found a famine in the land and the sons of the prophets went and sat before him. And he told his servant to cook a large pot of stew for the sons of the prophets. And one went out into the field to gather herbs and he found some gourd and gathered as many as he could carry, and minced them up and stirred them in with the pot of stew for they did not know what it was; so when they started eating it made them sick and they cried out and old the man of God, that there was death in the stew. And he told them to bring meat and put in the same sew that had made them ill and they did so; and there no longer any harm is the stew. And there came a man from Baalshalisha and brought the man of God bread of the first fruits, twenty loaves of barley and full ears of corn in the husk; and he said give unto the people that they may eat. And the visitor Asked, “Shall I set this before a hundred men?” And Elisha said again, “Give unto the people that they may eat; for thus saith the Lord they shall eat and shall leave thereof.”  So he set it before them; and they did eat and left over thereof.

Elisha restored the Dead Child
Elisha admitted that the Lord had not revealed to him his purpose in the matter of the Shunammite’s son. And the woman asked Elisha, “Did I require a son of my lord? Did I not say to you, do not deceive me?” Then Elisha told his servant Gehazi to gird up his loins, take his staff in his hand and go his way. He told him not to speak to anyone on the way should he meet one, nor salute any that salute him; but to go on his way and lay his staff on the face of the child. And the mother of the child said, “As the Lord liveth and as thy soul liveth I will not leave thee.” And Elisha arose and followed her. In the meantime Gehazi preceded them, and arriving where the child was, laid Elisha’s staff on the face of the child; but there was neither voice nor hearing. So Gehazi went back and told Elisha that the child was not awakened. And when Elisha entered the house the child was already dead, and laid on his bed. So Elisha went in and closed the door, and prayed unto the Lord. Then he went unto the bed and laid himself upon the child, and put his mouth upon the child’s mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands upon his hands; and the flesh of the child grew warm. Then Elisha went back into the house, and walked to and fro and then went back to his room and stretched himself upon the child; and the child sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.

BRAGADAYJAH 1067
The Shunammite’s Child dies.
And when the child was grown, it happened that one day he went out to his father who was with the reapers. And the child complained about his head, and his father ordered that he be taken back to the house to his mother.  And when her son was delivered to her, she put him on her knees where he sat until he died. And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God and closed the door and went out. Then she sent to her husband and asked him to send one of the servants and one of the asses to her so she could run quickly to the man of God and return again.  Then after the servant had saddled the ass,  she instructed the servant to drive the ass as fast as he could, not slacking even for her unless she asked him. So she went and came toward the man of God at Mount Carmel.  And it came to pass that even while she was yet afar off, the man of God saw her coming, and told his servant Gehazi, “Behold the Shunammite woman is coming. Run now to meet her and ask her if everything is well with her, with her husband and with the child.” And she said all was well. But she continued on to the man of God and when she came to her on a hill she caught him by the feet and Gehazi went to pull her away from his master; but Elisha ordered him to leave her alone; for, he said, “Her soul is vexed within her; for the Lord has hid it from me and has not told me.”

BRAGADAYJAH 1066

BRAGADAYJAH 1066
Elisha prophesied the Shunammite would bear a son.
And it came to pass that on a certain day Elisha went to Shunem where there was a wealthy woman; and she persuaded him to eat bread with her and he accepted; and after that whenever he passed her way he would stop and eat bread with her. And she told her husband that she perceived that Elisha was a holy man of God who passed by them regularly. Therefore she told her husband that they should make a little chamber furnished with a bed and table and candlestick so that when he came by again he could lodge there. And so the next time Elijah went by he was invited to lodge; and he went into the chamber and lay down. And Elisha told his servant Gehazi to call the Shunammite woman and she came and stood before Elisha. And Elisha told his servant to ask the woman what was to be done for her, seeing she had been entertaining him all that time; whether she wanted to be spoken for to the king, or perhaps a captain of the host. And the woman answered and said that she was living among her own people. And Elisha told Gehazi to ask the woman what was to be done for her. And he replied and said that she had no child and her husband was old. And Elisha told him to call her and she came and stood in front of the door. And Elisha told her that about that same time according to the season she would bear a child. “And she said or my lord, do not lie about such a thing.” But Elisha assured her and she did conceive and bore a son in due season as Elisha had told her.

BRAGADAYJAH 1065

BRAGADAYJAH 1065
Miracle of the Widows Oil
The king of Moab then took his eldest son that could have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel. And they then the Amorites left and returned to their own land. Now at that time a woman one of the wives of the sons of the prophets appeared unto Elisha and said to him, “Thy servant my husband is dead; and you know that he was a man who feared the Lord. And now his creditors have come to take my two sons to be bondsmen.”  And Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you. What do you have in your house?”  And she told Elisha that the only thing she had was a pot of oil. And Elisha told her to go to her neighbors and borrow as many empty vessels as she could, telling her to make sure she got quite a lot. And Elisha told her further, that when she would have gathered all the empty vessels she could, she should shut herself and her sons inside her house, and start filling all the empty vessels she had gathered with oil from the one pot which she had.  And when there was no pots left, she went and told Elisha and he told her to go sell the oil and pay her debts, and use the rest of the money she got for herself and her sons to live on.
