BRAGADAYJAH 687

So Joshua charged the people, “Put away the false gods that are among you and incline your hearts unto the Lord God of Israel.”  And the people answered and said unto Joshua, “The Lord our God will we serve and his voice we will obey.” So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak that was by the sanctuary of the Lord.  And Joshua said unto all the people behold, this stone shall be witness unto us this day for it has heard all the words of the Lord which He spoke unto us it shall serve as a witness unto you lest you deny your God.”

Having heard Joshua’s admonition, they responded and said, “God forbid that we should forsake the Lord our God to serve other gods; for the Lord our God, He it is that brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage; and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us all the way wherein we went and among all the people through whom we passed; and the Lord our God drove out from among us all the people even the Amorites in whose land we dwelt; therefore, we will serve the Lord for He is our God.”  And Joshua said unto the people. “You cannot serve the Lord, for He is a holy God; He is a jealous God; He will not forgive your transgressions and your sins. If you forsake the Lord your God and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt and consume you after He has done you good.” And the people said unto Joshua nay, “we will serve the Lord.”  And Joshua replied to the people and said. “You are witness against yourselves that God has chosen you to serve Him;” and the people said. “We are witnesses.”  Now then said Joshua, “put away the strange gods that are among you and incline your hearts to the Lord your God.”

“And I have given you a land for which you have not labored and cities which you did not build and you dwelt in them and vineyards and olive yards which ye did not plant, yet you ate. Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in truth and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the river, and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.  And if it seems evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the river, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you  dwelt; but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.”

Joshua Recounts Israel’s History
And God brought your fathers out of Egypt, and when they cried unto the Lord, He put darkness between them and the Egyptians and brought the sea upon them and covered them. “And your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt and you dwelt in the wilderness a long time. And I brought you into the land of the Amorites which dwelt on the other side of the Jordan; and they fought with you and I gave them into your hands and destroyed them before you. But I would not hearken unto Balaam, therefore he blessed you still; so I delivered you out of his hand. And you went over the Jordan and came unto Jericho and the men of Jericho fought against you; the Amorites and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites the Jebusites. And I delivered them into your hands.  And I sent the hornet before you which drove them out from before you even the two kings of the Amorites but not with the sword or with your bow.

Joshua Gathered All Israel.
And Joshua gathered all the children of Israel to Shechem and called for the elders, and the heads, their judges and their officers; and they present themselves before God. And Joshua said unto all the people. Thus saith the Lord God of Israel. Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old times, even Terah the father of Abraham and the father of Nachor and they served other gods.  And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood and led him through all the lands of Canaan and multiplied his seed and gave him Isaac. And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau, and I gave unto Esau Mount Seir to possess it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt. And I sent Moses and Aaron and I plagued Egypt according to what I did among them and afterwards I brought you out. And I brought your fathers out of Egypt and ye came unto the sea, and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto the red sea.  More

Joshua Admonishes

Take heed to yourself to love the Lord your God, “Else if you do in any way go back and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even those that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them; and go in unto them and they to you, know for a certainty that the Lord your God will no more drive out any of these nations before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorn in your eyes, until you perish from off this good land which the Lord your God has given you. And behold this day I am going the way of all the earth and you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spoke concerning you; but all are come to pass unto you and not one thing has failed. Therefore just as all good things come upon you when you follow the Lord, so shall evil thigs befall you until you have been destroyed off the earth if you turn from following the Lord your God and transgress His commandments.

BRAGADAYJAH 681

Joshua admonished, “Be ye therefore, very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, to turn neither to the right nor to the left therefrom, that you come not among these nations, these that remain among you, neither make mention of the names of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, nor bow down to them nor serve them. But cleave unto the Lord your God as you have done unto this day. For the Lord has driven out from before you great nations and strong; but none was able to stand before you unto this day. One man of you shall chase a thousand; for the Lord your God it is He that fights for you, as He has promised you. Take good heed, therefore, that you love the Lord your God.

So appeased, Phinehas the priest and the princes left the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh and went out of the land of Gilead and retuned unto the children of Israel, and brought them word telling them that Reuben and the rest of his brethren on the other side of the Jordan did not disrespect the Lord God of heaven or disregarded his statutes and His commandments by the altar which they had built, but rather a memorial for future generations, and in remembrance of the Lord their God. The news pleased the children of Israel, and they were happy that there was no need to go to war against their brethren their fellow Israelites on the other side of the Jordan.  And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh called the name of the altar Ed, meaning a witness between them and God

“God forbid,” explained the Reubenites, “that we should rebel against the Lord our God, and turn away from following the Lord to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifice, beside the altar of the Lord our God.” And so when Phinehas the priest and the princes of the thousands of Israel which were with him heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of the half tribe of Manasseh spoke, that it pleased them. And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto them, “this day we perceive that you have not departed from following after the Lord.”

So then let us see the Reubenites reply and learn their true motives. “The children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered the children of Israel and said. The Lord God of Gods, and the God of the children of Israel knows. He knows whether we built this altar in rebellion or transgression against Him. He knows whether we have built this altar to offer, burnt offering, or peace offerings or meat offerings out of fear and reverence to Him or not. If not let Him condemn us this day. He knows we have built it as a memorial to our children that in time to come our children and yours shall see it as a remembrance and know that the Lord have caused the river Jordan to be a border between us. So we decided to build this alter not to burn offering or sacrifice on, but as a memorial between us and you and between our children and your children so that they may know in time to come that we too serve the same God as you do.

BRAGADAYJAH 676

BRAGADAYJAH 676
Now as it will be seen, the children of Israel, like we so often do today, acted hastily; they condemned first and asked questions afterwards.  So as we have seen over the last two days, the children of Israel heard that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh, on their returning to Gilead by of the Jordan, and after they had crossed over, built an altar juxtaposed to the altar that the company of Israel had previously built when they initially crossed over the Jordan on their way to the land of Canaan. Now after they heard that the Reubenites and company had built an altar of their own, having returned to Gilead, they assumed it was an altar contrary to the commandments of God and straightway condemned them, and was preparing to go to war against them without more. But were they justified in doing so? Come here tomorrow for the conclusion of the matter

BRAGADAYJAH 675

BRAGADAYJAH 675
So the children of Israel said to the Reubenites the Gadites and the half tribe of Manasseh, if your land be unclean, then pass over unto the land of the possession of the Lord, wherein the tabernacle of the Lord dwells and take possession among us; but do not rebel against us to by building an altar near to the altar of the Lord our God. Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel and the man punished not alone in his iniquity? Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered and said to the hundreds of Israel, the Lord God of gods he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion or in transgression against the Lord, save us not this day. That we have built us an altar to turn from following the Lord, or if to offer thereon burnt offering, or sin meat offering or if to offer peace offering thereon, let the Lord himself require it. And if we have not rather done it in fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children shall speak unto our children saying what have we to do with the Lord out of Israel, for the Lord has made Jordan a border between us and you ye children of Reuben and children of Gad and you half tribe of Manasseh you have no part in the Lord, so shall you make your children cease from fearing the Lord.

BRAGADAYJAH 674

Now when the children of Israel heard that the children of Reuben and of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh had built an alter over against the land of Canaan near the Jordan at the very spot where the children of Israel had themselves crossed over, to worship contrary to the commandment of their God, they sent unto them Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and with him ten princes for each house, a prince of the head of the house of the children of Israel among the thousands of Israel. And they came to the children of Reuben, of God and the half house of Manasseh in the land of Gilead and said to them.  “Thus speak the whole congregation of the children of Israel unto you, What trespass is this you have committed against the Lord God of Israel to turn away from worshipping the Lord and have built an altar in disobedience to the command of the Lord your God.  Is the iniquity of Peor too little from us, from which we are not cleansed until this day although there was a plague in the congregation of the Lord?”  Explain, therefore why you have turned away from the Lord. Unless you turn away from your idolatry this day and turn to the Lord He will be angry with all Israel by tomorrow.

BRAGADAYJAH 673
We recall that to one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession in Bashan; but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side of Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also to their tents he blessed them. And he told them, return with much riches to your tents and with much cattle with silver and gold and with brass and with iron and with much raiment. Divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren. And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned and departed from the children of Israel at Shiloh which is in the land of Canaan to go unto the country of Gilead to the land of their possession whereof they were possessed according to the word by the hand of Moses. And when they came unto the borders of Jordan that are in the land of Canaan the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh built there a great altar for them to worship at.

Now Joshua called the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half tribe of Manasseh and said unto them, “You have kept all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you.  You have not left your brethren after all this time, but have done all that the Lord commanded you to do. Now, therefore the Lord your God gives you rest. Now, therefore, you may return unto the land of your brethren to the land which the Lord your God gave you by the hand of Moses on the other side of the Jordan.  But take diligent heed to do all the commandments of the Lord which He commanded you by His servant Moses, to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to obey His commandments, to cleave unto Him and to obey His commandment with all your heart and with all your soul. So Joshua blessed them and sent them away and they departed to dwell in their tents.

And all the cities of the Gershonites according to their families were thirteen cities with their suburbs. And unto the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the Levites out of the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with her suburbs, and Kartah with her suburbs. Dimnah with her suburbs and Nahalal with her suburbs, four cities. And out of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer with her suburbs, and Jahazah with her suburbs, Kedemoth with her suburbs and Mephaath with her suburbs four cities. And out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbs to be a city of refuge for the slayer, and Mahanaim with her suburbs, Heshbon with her suburbs, Jazer with her suburbs four cities in all. So all the cities of the children of Merari by their families which were remaining of the families of the Levites were by their lot twelve cities. And all the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty eight cities with their suburbs.   Every city had a suburb and afterwards the Lord gave rest unto Israel having given them the land He had promised them as He had sworn unto their fathers. And all the cities of the children of Aaron the priests were thirteen cities with their suburbs. And the families of the children of Kohath the Levites which remained of the children of Kohath, even they had the cities of their lot out of the tribe of Ephraim. For they gave them Shechem with her suburbs, in mount Ephraim to be a city of refuge for the slayer, and Gezer with her suburbs. And Kibzaim with her suburbs and Bethhoron with her suburbs four cities. And out of the tribe of Dan Eltekeh with her suburbs Gibbethon with her suburbs Aijalon with her suburbs Gathrimon with her suburbs two cities. The Assignment of Levitical Cities

And the children of Merari by their families had out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun twelve cities. And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses. And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon these cities which were here mentioned by name, which the children of Aaron being of the families of the Kohathites who were of the children of Levi had for theirs was the first lot. And they gave them the city of Arba the father of Anak which city is Hebron in the hill country of Judah with the suburbs thereof round about it; but the fields of the city and the villages thereof, they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.

Then the Levites went to Joshua and Eleazar the priest and said, “The Lord commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities and suburbs to dwell in and for our cattle. Appointment of Cities of Refuge

Now these are the cities of refuge appointed by Joshua. Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in Ephraim and Kirjatharba, which is Hebron, in the mount of Judah. And on the other side of the Jordan by Jericho eastward was assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.  These were the cities for all the children of Israel and for the stranger that sojourn that whosoever kills any person unawares might flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood until he stood before the congregation.

Now after Joshua allotted the portion for the tribe of Judah to Caleb by boundaries, he then divided up the rest of the land of Canaan to the other tribes by lot and boundary. Then the Lord spoke to Joshua and told him to tell the children of Israel to appoint cities of refuge as directed by Moses, that the slayer that kills any person unawares or unwittingly may flee there as a refuge from the avenger of blood; and when any manslayer that has so killed unintentionally, and without malice, he may flee there and standing at the entrance of the city plea his cause to the elders of that city, and the elders of that city will defend him from the avenger of blood.  And he shall be permitted to remain in that city until he appears before the congregation for judgment and until the death of the high priest, and after that the manslayer may return to his own city and his own house from which he came before he fled.

As yet, declared Joshua, “I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me as my strength was then, even so is my strength now for war even to go out and to come in. Now, therefore, give me this mountain whereof the Lord spoke in that day. For thou heard in that day how the Anakims were there and that the cities were great and fenced; if so be the Lord’s will with me, then I will be able to drive them out as the Lord said.”  So Joshua blessed him and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance; for Caleb had wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.

BRAGADAYJAH 663
The only people that the Israelites did not expel, but rather allowed to live among them continually were the Maachathites and the Geshurites.  And the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan which was distributed to them by Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel was as follows:  For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim, the Levites not getting a share of the land except cities to dwell in with their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance. Then the children of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite and said unto him. “Thou knoweth the thing the Lord said unto Moses the man of God, concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea.  Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land and I brought him word again as was in my heart.  Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed the Lord my God. And now behold the Lord hath kept me alive as He said these forty years ever since the Lord spoke this word unto Moses while the children of Israel wandered and now lo I am this day fourscore and five years old

BRAGADAYJAH 662

BRAGADAYJAH 662
So God directed Joshua to divide the land between the nine tribes of Israel plus the half tribe of Manasseh, reminding him that the Reubenites and the Gadites had already received their inheritance from Moses beyond Jordan eastward which Moses had given them back then at their request. God then pointed out the area to be shared, which included the land from Aroer at the bank of Aron and the city that is in the midst of the river and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon. And all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites which reigned in Heshbon unto the border of the children of Ammon. And Gilead and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites and all mount Hermon, and all Bashan unto Salcah. And all the kingdom of Og, in Bashan which reigned in Ashtaroth, and in Edrei who remained of the remnant of the giants for these did Moses smite and cast them out.

BRAGADAYJAH 661

Now when Joshua was old and stricken in years, the Lord told him there was still much land to be possessed, namely all the land of the Philistines, and all Geshuri from Sihor which is before Egypt even unto the borders of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanites, five lords of Philistines, the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites and the Ekronites and the Avites.  And from the south all the lands of the Canaanites and Mearah that is beside the Sidonians unto Aphek to the borders of the Amorites And the land of the Giblites and all Lebanon toward the sun rising from Baalgad under mount Hermon unto the entrance to Hamath.  All the inhabitants of the Hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephothmaim and all the Sidonians. Them will I drive out from before the children of Israel, only divide thou it by lot unto the children of Israel for an inheritance I have commanded you.

Bragadayjah660

So Joshua spent many years in battle with the kings of the surrounding nations, and there was none that made peace with the children of Israel except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon, all others being conquered in battle.  For it was God’s will that all the others would be destroyed in battle in that he hardened their hearts and made them to wage war against Israel, that He might utterly destroy them, not having found any favor with Him and left it to Joshua to destroy them, as Moses commanded. And at that time came Joshua and cut off the Anakims from the mountains from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab and from the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly and their cities. There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: Only in Gaza, and in Ashdod there remained. So Joshua took the whole land according to all the LORD said unto Moses and Joshua gave it as an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.

After that, Joshua turned his attention to Hazor and took that city; he smote the king with the sword for Hazor was of former times the king of those kingdoms that had aligned themselves against Israel. And he smote all the inhabitants of that city so that none were left alive; and afterwards he burnt the city with fire. And all the cities of those kingdoms were destroyed as Moses the servant of the Lord had directed him to do.  But of the cities that stood still in their strength Joshua burnt none except Hazor. And all the spoils of those cities and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword until there were none left. So Joshua took all the lands, the hills and all the south country and all the land of Goshen and the valley and the plain and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same. from Mount Halak, that goes up to Seir even unto Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon and all their kings he took and smote them.

With the host of several armies encamped against Israel, the Lord spoke to Joshua and said, “Be not afraid because of them. For tomorrow by this time I will deliver them up all slain before Israel. Thou shall hough their horses and burn their chariots with fire. So Joshua came and all Israel with him against them by the waters of Merom and fell upon them suddenly. And the Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel who smote them and chased them unto great Zidon and unto Misrephothmaim and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left none of them remaining. And Joshua did unto them as the Lord bade him; he houghed their horses and burnt their chariots with fire.

Now it came to pass that when Jabin, king of Hazor heard about the conquests of Israel and how Joshua had dealt with the defeated lands, that he summoned together Jobab, king of Madon, and the king of Shimron, the king Achshaph, the kings that were on the North of the mountains, and the kings of the plains, south of Chinneroth, the kinks of the valley and in the borders of Dor on the West, and to the Canaanites on the East and on the West, and to the Amorites and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites in the mountains, and to the Hivites under Hermon, in the land of Mizpeh.  And they went out, they and all their hosts, a large array of people as numerous as the sands of the seashore with much horses and chariots; and after gathering together they marched together and pitched their camps at the waters of Merom in preparation to attack Israel.
